Showing until the 26th June at the In Our Nature (ION) show at Lost Eden in Dwellingup is my latest work 'Banquet'. Please pop in have a look if you are in the area. #art #waartist #losteden #photography #ibis #binchicken #adobe For some time, I have been contemplating the idea of man as a transcendent animal and the contradiction and tension in that. Humans are divine creatures full of magic and capable of greatness, but we exist in physical bodies that have primal needs, wants, feelings and reactions. We are gods often driven by baser instincts. When I came upon a huge flock of Ibises at a rubbish tip, I was instantly captivated by them and realised that this bird reflected our own story. In ancient Egypt the Ibis was the incarnation of the god Thoth, who was responsible for maintaining the universe, judging the dead, and overseeing systems of magic, writing, and science; today the bin chicken is a dirty scavenging bird that fights to eat garbage scraps. Banquet began to build from this above idea and the concept of creating an image that reflected at once both an earthly setting and an otherworldly one. I wanted to speak about notions of squandered opportunity and impoverishment, and to discuss death and the afterlife. I was also very conscious of religious readings and particularly references to the ‘Last Supper’, and I drew visual inspiration from painters such as Caravaggio and the Dutch still life masters when shaping this work.
