On Monday, March 31, 2025 we learned that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is targeting the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) with the aim of substantially reducing its staff, cutting the agency’s grant programs, and rescinding grants that have already been awarded. As we have seen with similar recent actions, including the recent attack on IMLS, these actions have the potential to devastate the agency. We learned this morning, Thursday, April 3, that DOGE has begun terminating previously awarded NEH grants. We understand that this includes operating grants to the state and jurisdictional humanities councils, scholarly societies, community organizations, and individuals. It is imperative that you take action now by reaching out to your Members of Congress and encouraging them to support the NEH. Visit the link in our bio to learn more and take action.

Michigan Tech Advocates for the Humanities in Washington, D.C. A delegation from Michigan Tech, including Humanities professors Kette Thomas, Sue Collins and Jennifer Nish Social Sciences professor Steven Walton visited Michigan’s Representatives and Senators on March 12. The visit coincided with Humanities Advocacy Day, a day of outreach organized by the National Humanities Alliance, which serves as an integral organization preserving funding for the arts, humanities and social sciences. The Michigan Tech team visited the congressional offices of Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Gary C. Peters, and Reps. Jack Bergman (MI-1) and John Moolenaar (MI-2). They were accompanied by Bryan Whitledge from Central Michigan University and the Society of American Archivists, who drew additional attention to the accomplishments in the Upper Peninsula and throughout the state of Michigan through National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) funding. On Capitol Hill, the faculty made arguments in support of funding the NEH — which also directly funds the Michigan Humanities Council, National Archives, National Historic Records Preservation Committee and the Title IX/Fullbright-Hayes programs for international languages. #advocay #humanities #michigantech #arts

Day 2 of #NHC23IN featured some amazing sessions, including an opportunity for @nehgov Chair Shelly Lowe to meet with this year’s equitable access grantees. The Schwartz Prize was awarded to @akhumanitiesforum , @rihumanities , and @nchumanities . Finally, we traveled to the @walkertheatre for the Capps Lecture and heard from A’Lelia Bundles and Tyrone McKinley Freeman about the importance of making sure everyone’s stories are told. We can’t wait to see what the final day of the conference has in store! 📷: Harley Avery
