This shoot was inspired by my childhood.
After spending some time in the city, I realized it had been a while since I was around places like these, roadside fruit stalls, old coffee shops, the noise of wet markets, and even the raw, distinct presence of a butcher stall.
I grew up in an environment like this. I remember my dad bringing me to the butcher stall, my grandma selling veggie at morning market, and the mix of dialects filling the coffee shops.
Back then, these moments felt ordinary. It wasn’t something I paid much attention to. But as time passed and things slowly changed, I began to see them differently, there was something about them that stayed with me.
Things like chee cheong fun, iced kopi, fruits, and the familiar presence of the elderly became key elements in this shoot. They may seem simple, but they’ve always been a part of my everyday growing up.
Looking back now, I realize these small, quiet details
have always lived somewhere in me.
Even though this isn’t the place I grew up in,
the first time I stepped in, it felt strangely familiar.
So I brought that sense of memory and familiarity
into this editorial shoot, as a way of seeing it again, differently!
