In 'Gamera II' the titanic turtle’s opponent is the creepy-crawly colony of space bugs, the Symbiotic Legion; a kaiju that brings the biblical barbarism from 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' front-and-center to the Gamera experience. Legion’s got Ian asking, “What’s up with bugs in the ‘90s?” He and Joseph go on an exciting excursion through the canon of great pre-millennium insect critters – the Zerg from _Starcraft_, the Arachnids from Paul Verhoeven’s now-beloved but then-derided _Starship Troopers_, and so on. Later, Joseph drops another cortex-crushing take on the psychological subtext to Gamera’s triumphant return to the screen. All that plus a solid discussion of post-apocalypses in film and video games and why we could use fewer of them. Episode link in Bio.

This episode and the two that follow are just too good to leave on Patreon. Listeners are probably familiar with Godzilla, King of the Monsters, but the trilogy of Gamera films from the 90’s are as good as any of the Godzilla films (honestly – maybe better?). Gamera is a flying turtle but don’t let that ridiculous premise fool you, ‘Gamera: Guardian of the Universe’ is a seriously excellent film, thanks in no small part to all the Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell staffers that helped make it. It’s a ghost story - but on a SPACE SHIP! Pretty sick. “Magnetic Rose” was written by Satoshi Kon as part of ‘Memories,’ a three-part anthology film produced by ‘Akira’ auteur Katsuhiro Otomo
The Human Instrumentality Podcast’s Patreon bonus episode on ‘Magnetic rose’ has been UNLOCKED. Take a listen? Link in Bio. Remember to Rate, Review and subscribe. Thanks! #anime #satoshikon #magneticrose #memories #katsuhirootomo #akira

That’s the question Satoshi Kon asked in ‘Perfect Blue’ his (Perfect) first movie. It’s a psychedelic psychological thriller that catapulted Kon to international acclaim, and we break down it’s tricky plot and even trickier production history in our new episode - link in bio!

We're back with an extra beefy episode! Before launching into Satoshi Kon's proper filmography, we took a quick detour into the wild world of Shonen to talk about the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure OVA, which Kon worked on before directing his own movies. Is Shonen for jocks? What do we make of the homoeroticism? How does the Tarot factor into all of this? Find out on the latest episode of The Human Instrumentality Podcast!!
Twelve years go today (yesterday… shh) Satoshi Kon passed away. He was too young, but what he accomplished in his career as a director and animator was astounding. We’re going to cover his entire filmography but first - some background. You know, Kon the starving artist, Kon the nobody-about-to-be-somebody, Kon the… background artist for #akira!? Episode link in bio.
