50 years ago...Hōkūleʻa wasnʻt the only waʻa kaulua in Honolua Bay. By Hōkūleʻaʻs side as all waited for departure on her maiden voyage, was Mauiʻs first coastal and inter-island sailing canoe in recent memory, Moʻolele. Moʻolele, which means leaping lizard, had launched the previous year, just 6 months after Hōkūleʻa. Moʻolele was built by Master Carver Keola Sequeira, who carved Hōkūleʻaʻs original mast heads. He was a friend of Hōkūleʻa designer and PVS Co-Founder Herb Kawainui Kāne and he was trained by master carver Wright Bowman, Sr. who oversaw the construction of Hōkūleʻa. Keola then asked Herb to draw a design for Moʻolele, which Herb says he had to do hastily before a work trip and Keola refined it. Keola passed away in 2022 and a year later Moʻolele perished in the Lahaina Wildfires. Moʻolele belonged to Hui O Waʻa Kaulua, which also has the voyaging canoe Moʻokiha O Piʻilani. With Keolaʻs original molds of Moʻolele, Hui O Waʻa Kaulua is in the process of re-building this legendary canoe. Follow along as we reflect on this time 50 years ago, celebrating, honoring, and remembering Hōkūleʻa’s landmark 1976 maiden voyage through this series of photos, videos, newspaper articles, first hand accounts, and more! #Hokulea #MaidenVoyage #50Years50More

Our after school club enjoying time with crew as they learn what it takes to holomoana. Reading the ocean, winds and tides are all part of their journey while also observing the patterns in our sky quickly noticing the connection to the oli and mele they practice. We are so proud of our haumana and see the improvement they’ve made in just a short time. Kau ka peʻa, holo ka waʻa!

The next generation. A family legacy of voyaging. A second-generation voyager, watch captain, and navigator aboard Hikianalia, Kalā Baybayan-Tanaka sailed the very path voyages by her late father, Pwo Navigator Chad Kālepa Baybayan. Kālepa’s first voyage on Hōkūle’a was in 1980 and he sailed many after, including this same leg to Aotearoa during the 1985 Voyage of Rediscovery and again in 2014 for the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage. A key captain and navigator for the Polynesian Voyaging Society, Kālepa helped lay the foundation for the generations of voyagers who sail today. Now, from father to daughter, that ʻike continues as the Leg 15 crew successfully pulled Aotearoa from the sea on November 6th, 2025. Watch Kalā’s full story at the link in our bio and on our YouTube channel.

This DOE-funded initiative, led by Maui Huliau Foundation in collaboration with Hui o Waʻa Kaulua, Lele Aloha, and over 20 waʻa- and ʻāina-based community partners, cultivates a Navigator Mindset grounded in sustainability and connection to place—preparing students to become globally competitive, locally committed leaders. 🌊💙
