We got a close-up look at a unique citizen science program aboard the historic tall ship Fullriggeren Sørlandet.
The students shared how the project works in real life: rough weather, handwritten notes, limited connectivity — and a constantly improving observation process.
Together with The Ocean Cleanup, Ecowende, Healthy Seas and partners across the room, the discussion focused on one thing: how do we turn these observations into data that creates real value?
Several next steps emerged, including technology to help automate #plastic observations along the vessel’s route. HUB Ocean will also help structure and standardize the data flows as partners begin testing practical pilot use cases.
The raw data is already out there. Now it needs to become usable. Onwards.
We’ve done some spring cleaning in our documentation to make it easier to find what you need, whatever you're building. As always, if something's unclear or missing, we want to hear about it. 📄✨

In The Same Boat is Norway's largest beach-cleaning organization — and they don't do things halfway. ⛵
Using sailboats and international volunteers, they reach the coastlines that no one else can, all while keeping their environmental footprint minimal.
Their flagship dataset documents plastic pollution removal across more than 11,000 km of Norwegian coastline — turning four years of on-the-ground action into data that others can learn from and use.

The ocean doesn't have borders. Your data view shouldn't either.
#Upgrade We’re excited to share that Map Explorer on the #OceanDataPlatform now supports multi-layer visualization and customizable styles. You can add public or private datasets, select attributes to visualize, and adjust styling to suit your needs. The URL captures all configuration details, so when you save or share it, others can access the exact same visualization.

Strengthening the mission — two exceptional leaders join the HUB Ocean Board.
We are delighted to welcome Bruno Sanchez-Andrade Nuño and Thomas Thune Andersen to the HUB Ocean Board of Directors.
Bruno has worked across the Microsoft Planetary Computer, the World Bank, Mapbox, and recently co-founded LGND and Clay — advancing the frontiers of AI, Earth observation, and open data.
Thomas, former Chair of Ørsted and current Chair of Lloyd’s Register Group, brings decades of leadership across maritime, energy, sustainability and the global energy transition.
Together, they add extraordinary depth at the intersection of technology, industry, and planetary stewardship.
Exciting times ahead!

Nullfiskeområdene i Oslofjorden er innført. Nå begynner forskningen. 📊
