Spent time with @htujazz , and walked away with a deeper appreciation for the legacy these students are carrying forward. From conversations with the directors to hearing directly from the musicians, one thing is clear this isn’t just a band, it’s a revival.
This program is connected to giants: Duke Ellington collaborators, Carmen Bradford, Leroy “Hog” Cooper, and Demita Jo, voices and players who helped shape jazz history.
Now, a new generation is building on that legacy.
In just a few years, the program has grown and is now taking its sound beyond Austin, even traveling to New York City to compete nationally against some of the top collegiate jazz programs in the country.
And they’re not just making noise on campus, you can catch these students performing at venues all across Austin.
Keep an eye out. These are artists on the rise, carrying history with them every time they play.
