THERAPISTS.....GET READY FOR ANOTHER CREATIVE & SOULFUL SUPERVISION MORNING!!!
Dear friends.
The next Creative & Soulful Supervision Morning will take place on Saturday, 16 May.
✨✨✨This month’s theme will be: In the Dark Forest of the Mother.
We will step into the maternal landscapes; into the places of early holding and absence, nourishment and wounding, love and loss, that continue to shape our client’s bodies, patterns of attachment, and the therapeutic relationship itself.
I’ll leave you with a reflection shared after our last session:
“The space allowed me to connect deeply with fellow practitioners and my client’s material in a profound and inspiring way”
✨✨✨See more details below --- You are warmly invited!

Why Your Therapist Shouldn’t Tell You What to Do. (New article over on Substack!)
It’s a desire most of us feel at times: the wish to hand over the difficult task of decision-making—about the big things in life, and sometimes even the small ones—to someone wise, benevolent, and certain. A wish to escape the existential weight of being alive: the anxiety of choice, the fear of taking wrong turns, failing at what matters most, or simply getting it all wrong.
With that uncertainty always hovering in the background of human life, it’s understandable that we might want to surrender our autonomy to someone else—to let them carry the responsibility for decisions we’re afraid to make ourselves.
And yet, this is precisely why we shouldn’t. It is through taking responsibility for our lives, developing our autonomy, and reconnecting with our own inner wisdom that we grow into stronger, more grounded, and more confident human beings.
This is part 1 of a 2-part article exploring how and why we are so keen to outsource our autonomy... And looking at how good therapy can do the opposite by helping you find the inner wisdom and self-trust to guide you to a more authentic life.
In Part 2 (coming soon), I explore why so many of us are beginning to hand over our sense of agency to AI–and precisely why we shouldn’t.

HOW DO YOU LOVE SOMEONE? ❤️
Couples Counsellor & Psychotherapist Candy Newman Asks The Big Question.
So, how do you love someone? It seems like a very simple question, but when someone asks, ‘how do you know you love someone?’, it evokes an answer that will be totally unique to your own self, and the answer can be very complex.
Everyone is different when it comes to addressing their role in a close relationship, and therein lies a potential issue that could possibly cause problems for you and your partner if you both have different needs in a relationship.
Counsellor, psychotherapist, and parent coach Candy Newman, working in North London, looks at some of the factors behind the question ‘How do you love someone?’ and offers insights into how our own personal needs affect the way we behave in our close relationships with other people.
Candy also offers couples counselling as part of her practice.
Candy tells us about the causes and benefits for people seeking couples counselling, which addresses the question ‘How do you know if you really love someone?’.
She says, “All individuals have different family histories, different personal characteristics and different assumptions about how to love someone and what a loving relationship should be like.”
Candy goes on to say, “These differences impact relationships. You may find yourself reacting to your partner in ways that surprise you. You may begin to feel differently towards your partner than you did at the start of your relationship. Couples counselling is an opportunity to make sense of the complexities of being with another individual. It allows you and your partner to build trust and honest communication with each other.”

Who We Were Before We Became Therapists: How Past Roles Shape Present Practice.
Hosted by James Crossland, Integrative Counsellor > /james-crossland-integrative-counsellor-london-e8/
About This Event
Before becoming therapists, we lived other lives — careers, roles, identities, and experiences that continue to shape the way we work today.
This informal CPD discussion invites therapists to reflect on the personal and professional journeys that inform their therapeutic practice.
Together, we will explore how our past roles, lived experiences, cultural identities, and personal narratives influence the way we relate to clients and hold therapeutic space.
The aim of this reflective session is to deepen self-awareness, recognise transferable strengths, and consider how our histories can both enrich and challenge our work.
In This Session We Will Explore
• Identifying aspects of pre-therapy careers or life experiences that influence therapeutic style • Reflecting on transferable skills gained from previous roles • Recognising how personal identity, cultural background, and lived experience shape clinical practice • Developing greater self-awareness to strengthen the therapeutic relationship • Exploring how past experiences can be intentionally integrated — or safely bracketed — in therapy work
Who This Event Is For
This event is open to:
• Qualified therapists • Counsellors and psychotherapists • Trainee therapists • Helping professionals interested in reflective practice
Event Format
This will be a relaxed, discussion-based CPD session with opportunities for shared reflection and professional dialogue in a supportive environment.

I was inspired to write this article because of the conversations I've been having with women friends over the last few weeks... conversations about our fears—for ourselves, for our friends, for our daughters.
Fears that speaking up may result in misunderstanding, dismissal or violence.
Fears that, even if we have the courage to speak up, nothing may change.
But also our hope that our collective voices will create change for future generations.
With thanks to the 13 women who kindly allowed me to use their thoughts, words, their stories, and their hopes and fears in this article. In doing so, we hope that other women who read it will not feel alone in this difficult political/cultural moment.

WHAT IS EMDR??
Originally developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro in 1990 to treat symptoms of trauma and PTSD, Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR) is an integrative form of psychotherapy that combines talking therapy with bodywork.
It is thought to utilise the same state that you are in during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, during which you are processing emotions through your dreams.
The aim is to get you focusing on the associated negative thoughts and feelings that you have, and helping you to explore positive feelings with which you might want to replace them.
