Risograph Printing with @howsem
Curated by @thegascollective as part of Material Conversations
🗓️ Thursday, May 21, 6:30 - 9:30 PM
📍San Cafe (165 Augusta Ave.)
💥The event is at capacity. 🔗 in bio to join the waitlist!
Over the past five months, GAS Collective has visited Howsem Huang in his Toronto studio, learning about his process and the art of risograph. Here’s a glimpse:
“Tucked away in Kensington Market, Howsem’s studio is a vibrant haven for exploring all things risograph!
We have met with Howsem a couple of times (both in person and online!) since January to dive into his risograph printing practice. From walking us through the colour and printer mechanics to sharing his personal zine collections and book-designing journey, Howsem gave us an amazing look into the potential, challenges, and longevity of the soy-based medium.
We have had the best time brainstorming our upcoming workshop: participants are invited to bring in unique materials and create a collaborative Love Letter to a material that inspires their curatorial practice through risograph.”
This program is part of Material Conversations, an ongoing research project by GAS Collective, Curators-in-Residence at NAMARA | projects.

Texts, Tiles, and Tastes:
Exploring Chinese Characters through Collage
📅 Friday, March 20, 2026
🕓 4:30–6:30 PM
📍 EAS Lounge, 14th Floor, Robarts Libray
💈In Toronto’s Chinatown, Chinese characters appear everywhere—on menus, flyers, storefront signs, and street corners.
💡What happens if we cut them apart and reassemble them through collage?
💡What if we rebuild them using everyday objects and food?
Join us for a 120-minute collage workshop exploring Chinese characters as lived forms in contemporary urban spaces. Beyond textbooks and language classrooms, these characters appear as visual forms embedded in everyday life, carrying traces of food memories and diasporic history.
The session will feature short presentations by invited artists Jason Li and Howsem Huang, who will share their artistic practices related to Chinese characters in contemporary visual culture.
After the artist talks, participants will create their own single-page collage using found texts and photographic materials. We will provide archival images from the Chinese Canadian Archives and other photographic materials. You are also welcome to bring your own!
No art experience needed!
Just curiosity, observation, and a willingness to experiment with Chinese characters.
🔖 Browse the slides to view some digital collage samples for inspiration! More paper-cut collage samples will be presented on site!
🎟 Registration required!

2026 Catlendar is here!
Last week, we soft launched our little flip-book 2026 calendar project at San Cafe’s mini market. Thank you to everyone who showed so much love and excitement! 💕
As Some Print Studio‘s first calendar project, we’ve combined our love for cats and whimsical doodles in this RISO-printed flip-book that doubles as a weekly calendar and memo pad. It offers a fun and sensory experience while remaining practical.
And don‘t worry if you missed our pop-up pre-order! We’re now open for online orders and will sell them at San Cafe as well as upcoming zine fairs.
Each 2026 Catlendar is $40.
And with each one sold, we will donate $10 to Toronto Indigenous Harm Reduction @torontoindigenousharmreduction to help raise funds for harm reduction resources as the colder months come.
Since each Catlendar is handmade, quantities are limited. To secure your copy, we highly recommend ordering online. Simply DM us with your name and contact email. We accept EMT or can provide a payment link (platform fees apply).
Currently, due to local delivery delays, we can only offer self-pickup at San Cafe @sancafe.meow (165 Augusta Ave, Toronto). We‘ll keep you updated if this changes.
Feel free to comment or DM if you have any questions! 🐾

Over the past year, I have been working to transform the abstract concepts in my photo series How to Fold a Paper Airplane into a conceptual photobook. With the support and collaboration of my Unpress partners, this book has finally come to life.
It will soon be available for purchase on the official Unpress website, and will also be stocked at nowhere book store in Taipei.
Title: How to Fold a Paper Airplane
Author: Tung Lin Tsai
Co-designer: Howsem Huang @howsem
Year Published: 2025
Edition of 50
———————————————
2023年底,我回台灣投票後,開始反覆做夢,《How to Fold a Paper Airplane》正是從這些夢境萌生。
———————————————
My book began with a question and a terrible dream.
In my recurring dreams, a giant red paper airplane hovers above Taipei, sometimes drifting across a table. The absurdity of this image serves as a fragile reminder of the island’s current state. Taiwan’s everyday life exists alongside a constant shadow of threat. Taiwan embodies this duality: crisis and normalcy coexisting. While people ride their scooters to work daily, Chinese PLA fighter jets conduct military operations throughout the Taiwan Strait. My absurd dream essentially became a question that haunts me: “How can we photograph something that has not yet happened?”
The structure of How to Fold a Paper Airplane responds to this question with a conversation between what is seen and what is withheld.
My book, How to Fold a Paper Airplane, is not a history, nor a prediction. It is the absurd dream I have had.
