Black History Month Spotlight: Howlin’ Wolf
Before the world knew him as a blues icon, Howlin’ Wolf was already helping shape the future of American music at Sun Records.
Born Chester Burnett, Howlin’ Wolf recorded some of his earliest and most influential tracks at Sun in the early 1950s with Sam Phillips, including “Moanin’ at Midnight” and “How Many More Years.”
His electrified Delta blues sound pushed the blues into louder, bolder territory. Often cited as one of the founding fathers of electric blues, Howlin’ Wolf was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and received a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award, with his influence spanning legends like The Rolling and Jimi Hendrix.
Beyond the music, he was also known for insisting his band be paid fairly and treated with respect, setting a powerful and uncommon standard in the industry at the time.
This Black History Month, we honor Howlin’ Wolf not only for his unmistakable sound, but for his lasting impact on music, culture, and the artists who followed.
