We were asked by our friend and neighbour Laurie Bimson to find him some timber for a special project he was working on. Laurie is quite well known in Sydney’s northern beaches as a proud local Guringai man and a descendant of Bungaree - leader of the Guringai tribe at the time of European arrival. Laurie needed a piece of seasoned hardwood to create a replica of a club that has some incredible significance. I’ll let Laurie explain:
“This club is a replica of the club my great great grandfather Bungaree used in a war with the Burramadegal clan ( Parramatta) about 200 years ago . The club is now in the Pitt Rivers museum in England. We will endeavour to get it back and give them this replica. Thanks Glenn for finding the right timber for us to make it”
Howes Timber is proud to be a very small part of this special project and wish Laurie every success in replacing the original club with this beautiful replica.
For more information on the original club please see the link below to the Pitt Rivers Museum which includes how the club came to be in the museum and an account of the ferocity of the war in which the club was used.
NB: The timber is Tallowwood and it has been stained with the resin of the Xanthorrhoea grass tree.

Yesterday we planed some recycled timber that was burnt during the 2019 bushfires at Mt Victoria. Photos show several passes through the planer. Timber is Corymbia Citriodora (Northern Spotted Gum) which is commonly used for power poles like this piece was. @outbacklumberjack@howes_ee
The trucks are rolling in :) We currently have a good supply of sustainably sourced high quality ironbark sawlog. We are producing the following products: F17 structural posts in 200x200, 250x250 in lengths up to 6.0. Decking and battens are also available to order @outbacklumberjack@howes_ee #ironbark#sawmill #sawmillbusiness #hardwood
We have solid ironbark logs available for playgrounds & other landscaping uses. Diameters 200-350mm and lengths up to 10m. Local and interstate delivery available.
Some big salvage logs coming in of late. We work with some awesome crane operators that enable us to salvage over 100 ton per year of these big hardwood barrels from Sydney tree removal jobs. Large logs like these get slabbed and sold unseasoned….Our customers then store and resell them in a few year once seasoned. #hardwood#sawmill #sawmillbusiness #sustainability #sustainabletimber #urbanlogging @outbacklumberjack@howes_ee
It started out easier than it finished…….. Photos in reverse order of the removal & relocation of our new Robinson 54 resaw. Big, old, solid, reliable & capable of resawing the toughest of hardwoods Robbo’s are hard to find. When this one became available locally we had to move quickly. It was all going so well until we got it back to the mill & our only option to unload - our big loader had dead batteries ( someone didn’t isolate the batteries 🤫) Unable to jump start it we gave up on the big loader but now had the saw stuck on the back of the truck with no machine big enough to lift it off. Pitch black and pouring rain we went with a sketchy AF plan to double lift with two very small loaders & drive the truck out from underneath. This might sound simple but 4 tons of unbalanced top heavy cast iron & steel lifted from a height is not easy in perfect conditions 🫣. With a unique blend of fatigue, precision loader control & swearing we were actually successful in the end with no damage to man or machine. Funnily the entire day felt like I was in an episode of outback truckers with everything seeming to go sideways at every opportunity. Thanks to Jim, Graham and James for your help. Looking forward to a day off :) 👍 #sawmill #sawmillbusiness #recycledtimber #outbacktruckers @outbacktruckersofficial@outbacklumberjack
