The Fussa Bu @hotfudgeishere
These photos are from Hot Fudge’s first photo book, **「キルミーソフトリー」 (Kill Me Softly)**, published by @superlabo . Hot Fudge captured these moments in Fussa City, located on the outskirts of Tokyo.
Fussa is truly unique; it hosts a U.S. Air Force base, creating a vibrant blend of cultures. This mix has significantly influenced the youth culture in this suburban area since the 1960s.

Kill Me Softly – HOT FUDGE
This 2025 photobook captures unplanned moments in Fussa and at the beach with members of Kyushakai. Through spontaneous encounters, the work reflects the artist’s sense of being alive and aims to convey a subtle vibration that cannot be expressed in words.

There’s been a lack of year-end best/favorite photobook lists this year. (Or maybe I just wasn’t invited to the party.) And I get it. People are over it. (Over everything!) Being the person trying to compile those lists is a nightmare. Corralling dozens of artists into doing anything at all is a Sisyphean task. And conversely, being asked to list and write about your favorite books of the year officially and for the record is like doing homework. HOWEVER, it seems I secretly liked my year end homework assignment and kinda missed doing it this year so I have self-assigned myself the task. But this list comes with less pressure since it’s only posted to instagram, and only a single-digit percentage of the people who follow me will probably see it. And there’s no rules. So a book like Nicolas Dykman’s which I wrote the intro for, is included - whereas on official lists that would be disqualifying since you’re not supposed to include books you had any involvement in making. (Even without rules in place, I’m not including my new City Confessions book on the list, that would be gauche!)
Some are reissues of known books, some are collections of old work published for the first time, and some are new work. All of them tickle something in me that overrides the fact my shelves are at capacity and I have no space left. Overrides the disdain on Deanna’s face when a new book arrives on the porch, inching us ever closer into “Horder’s Buried Alive” territory. Overrides the fact I’ll have to get rid of old books to fit new ones in. So THANK YOU publishers and artists for making this great stuff that I can’t seem to live without and that will end up collapsing onto me when the Big One strikes Southern California. “In the end he was crushed by his own books.” What a way to go.

It’s as if 2025 asked “Can there be too many good photobooks in a year?” and then went ahead as best it could with a resounding YES in the form of one title after another.
What a year.
2025年を振り返ると、「1年間でいい写真集が出すぎることってある?」と聞かれたら「YES!」と即答するような、次から次へと名作が出版された1年でした。なんと豊作な年だったのでしょう。
