Those conversations we have about death and dying can feel heavy, and even frightening, but they’re also some of the most meaningful we’ll ever have.
In this video, Hospiscare’s Spiritual Lead, Lucyann Ashdown and Occupational Therapist, Heather share why talking openly about your wishes with loved ones can ease uncertainty, deepen connection, and bring a sense of comfort when it’s needed most.
Talking about death and dying won’t make it happen, but it will help ensure your voice is heard and your wishes are respected.
Let’s start the conversation. 💛

It’s Dying Matters Awareness Week, and this year’s theme is “Let’s talk about death and dying”.
Through our work, providing specialist, compassionate care, we see first-hand how talking about death can be life changing, and in some cases liberating for everyone involved.
This might sound strange, but it helps people focus on what really matters to them, and supports loved ones to prepare emotionally and practically, so they can make the most of the time they have together.
We also know how difficult these conversations can be, and how often they are avoided.
End-of-life care is about more than medical support - it’s also about choice, dignity, and control. And it starts with talking about it more openly, sooner.
Thank you to Chev, Laura and Vicki for sharing their reflections as a powerful reminder of why these conversations matter.

Did you know that May is National Walking Month? 👣
The Spring bank holiday is a perfect reminder to step outside and take in the simple beauty of a seasonal walk. 🌸
Walking isn’t just good for your physical health - it can support your emotional wellbeing too. For those who are grieving, or caring for someone with a life-limiting illness, a walk can offer space to breathe, reflect, and feel a little lighter. 💙
If you’d value some company, you’re warmly invited to join Hospiscare’s monthly walking group. It’s a chance to connect, share, or simply walk alongside others who understand.
🗓 We meet on the second Tuesday of each month (excl. August) at 10:30am.
Please visit our website for all remaining 2026 walk dates and locations

Say hello to Fiona, our Shops Development Manager 👋
After a career in commercial retail that spans over 40 years, Fiona, joined the Hospiscare team in May 2023. Although every day is different, Fiona gives a taste of her role in a dedicated news & stories feature. 📰
Fiona says, "The work of my team is so different to other parts of Hospiscare, but it’s equally vital.... Our shops also act as the local Hospiscare hub for many members of our community – it’s their local point of contact with the hospice."
