Shell Cordovan being pickled prior to tanning. Universally, pH management is a crucial part of the tanning process as a whole. A low pH is required prior to tanning in order to facilitate good absorption and fixing of the tanning agents, which will be tree bark (vegetable) extracts for Shell Cordovan.

Introducing @nickshandmadeboots x Division Road Collaborations, Now Live! . . Following the excitement of our annual Residency event, it felt right to formally introduce Nicks Handmade Boots to Division Road with exclusive developments that highlight the fresh collaborative creativity and refinement you can expect from our partnership with this premium Pacific Northwest bootmaker. To spark excitement and enhance collectability in the utilitarian boot game, we introduce two make-ups crafted with rare Horween Leather tannages, exclusive stitching configurations, and carefully refined specifications for the Division Road twist on the traditional. Starting with unique leathers and vintage influences, we went back a decade or so to channel an industrial street mode — using everything we’ve learned since — to bring you the Nicks x DR Color Theory pack. Finished with custom Division Road collaboration false tongues and woven labels, these make-ups feature unique personalities that are highly sought after for any limited edition. #divisionroadinc #divisioncollabs #nicksboots #nickshandmadeboots #nicksdivision #horween #stitchdown #handsewnstitchdown #madeinamerica #luxuryheritage #vintagestyle #ruggedstyle #militarystyle #workwearstyle #artisanstyle #minimaliststyle #ivystyle #evergreenstyle #journeyofstyle #classicmenswear #originalgentleman

It’s that time of year! We’re happy as always to play our small part for @wilsonfootball and the @nfl . If you look closely you can see the little “W” that is a part of the embossing pattern we use for Wilson.

January will mark 105 years at our one and only location on Elston Avenue in Chicago. From 1905 to 1920 our tannery was located just south of where we are now, and from 1920 to 1923 we briefly operated two facilities. The Horween family has been tanning since the 1880s and the Eisendrath family for 3 generations before that. Our founder, Isidore, worked at an Eisendrath tannery when he first arrived in Chicago and the families were joined by the marriage of his son Arnold Sr. and Marian Eisendrath. Today, the long history of tanning in Illinois has been consolidated and we are the last tannery left.

The tanning yard. Our shell cordovan spends a minimum of 60 days in these pits with our special blend of tree barks. This is the “new” section of our tannery and was built in the early 1940’s.

A lot happens to a piece of football leather between leaving the tannery and making it onto the field. These two footballs have been “prepped” by equipment managers for game play - you can see the Chargers logo on the left and Broncos logo on the right. You can also see they are two different shades of brown - BUT, they are sitting on top of a flat piece of official football as it leaves the tannery.

Wet blue is staged for coloring and retanning. Wet blue is the starting point for all chrome tanned leathers. We have run some formulations for over 100 years and constantly work to develop others. We can control time, temperature, and introduce materials including dyes, waxes, oils, vegetable extracts (tree bark), and many others. In every case, the formulas we run are all proprietary and have been developed at our one and only facility in Chicago.

Before and after. Leather, particularly if it has been hot stuffed, may develop a white or hazy film over time. Referred to as “bloom,” this can appear over long or short periods of time, and is more likely to occur in the presence of temperature changes (especially warm to cold). The film is simply waxes and oils that have migrated to the surface. A simple brushing or buffing will remove or reintegrate the material and serves to both polish and protect the surface. Product: Tumbled Color 8 Shell Cordovan glasses case by Kreis.
