Hope Stutzman , 𝘙𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘺 , Cast paper clay, 13.25” × 4.5” × 4.5 “ 2025 Inspired by traditional Catholic arm reliquaries from the medieval period, which traditionally house the bones of Saints, this work replaces religious symbology with referents to esoteria and secret orders. Reliquary considers the relationship between objects, the material they are made of, and how their arrangement in space can point towards possible metaphysical forces interpreted through a religious, mystical, or art historical lens. 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘥 continues thru Sept 20 at long play in Santa Monica. Gallery hours Thurs - Sat 1-5 also daily by appt . Come see !

Decoys 1, 2, & 3 cast paper clay 2025 On view at @goggabooks through 8/10, thank you to @_leahrom for including me !! I’ve been making cast works in this material I’m calling paper clay, which is basically a tricked out papier-mâché. It has paper pulp, flour, salt, basalt powder, marble dust, and some other ingredients 💅. It’s about as strong as bisque fired clay and extremely lightweight, but it’s also water soluble. I worked it out making a set of decoy ducks, these are 3/6.

Earthturn, 2024 Oil on clipboard with paper 9 x 12 x 0.25 in. In The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, Rilke describes a neighbor who he can hear through the walls reciting poetry day in and day out. This neighbor one day became unmoored when he realized he could sense the earth turning beneath his feet, that he could tangibly feel the passage of time. The only way he could orient himself to the constant sense of movement was to recite the poetry he had memorized out loud. “Only in course of time an exaggerated admiration developed in him for those who … could go about and bear the motion of the earth”.

Portal Tomb with Guard, 2024 Oil, mineral pigments, graphite on board. 17.75” x 13” Portal tombs from the Neolithic era exist all over the world, but the peoples who built them were disparate and may have had no contact with one another! Spooky.
