When I walked into Parliament as the first Black woman elected to the House of Commons, I knew I was standing on the shoulders of so many who came before me, shepherding the dreams of my grandmother, the stories of immigrants, the courage of women and the aspirations of Black youth watching from classrooms across the country. That day wasn’t just the beginning — it was a breakthrough for many.

Did you know?:
The Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine, was the first person to introduce sickle cell disease to the House of Commons, bringing much-needed attention and legislative focus to this condition. Her efforts laid the groundwork for subsequent advocacy and policy development in Canada.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Juliet Daniel.
She leaves behind a powerful legacy in science and in community.
It was only weeks ago that Juliet and I spent time together at McMaster University during Black History Month. I remember her warmth, brilliance, and deep commitment to uplifting others.
My heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all who have been touched by her life and work.
Rest in peace Juliet 🤍

When young women are given the tools to succeed, they do extraordinary things.
That is what we witness every day at the @jacentre4girls —growth, resilience, and hope. Every program, every mentor, and every opportunity here is designed to help them shine.
I am proud of the safe and inspiring space we have created for our girls and their families.
