A career in home building is full of potential and the opportunity to progress.
The home building industry is a major source of training and employment, supporting around 750,000 jobs last year โ including around 9,000 trainees and apprentices โ across a broad range of roles from design and architecture to engineering, construction, and sales.
There are diverse range of career pathways and entry routes available in the home building industry.
Government support will be crucial to fully close the skills gap and meet housing ambitions. This includesโฆ
๐ Ensuring all entry routes โ including apprenticeship schemes โ are accessible
๐ Providing long-term investment in further education
๐ Taking steps to address viability, planning and demand-side barriers.
70% of young people say job protection from #AI is a key motivation for joining the industry.
AI presents opportunities for greater productivity and planning, but most roles remain AI-resistant by their nature.
Just 6% of #construction businesses expect AI adoption to reduce company headcount in the future - compared to 11% of businesses in other industries.
Supporting the future of home building ๐ทโโ๏ธ๐
Weโre proud to be part of the @homebuildersfederation โs Partner a College programme, a two-year pilot funded by @citb_uk helping students gain practical experience and build the skills needed for a career in construction.
Through this initiative at Hollinsgate in Burnley, weโre working to open doors for local talent and inspire the next generation of the industry.
At Prospect Homes, weโre passionate about creating opportunities as well as communities ๐ค

Building the homes of the future starts with building the workforce behind them.
At the 2026 HBF Skills Reception, MPs met apprentices, trainees, graduates and new entrants from across the home building industry to see first-hand the breadth of careers and entry routes our sector offers.
HAPPY WORLD PLUMBING DAY!
And what better way to celebrate this than talking to the next generations of people starting their careers in construction. Like any sector, it has it's challenges. And often the work we do is under appreciated and undervalued. But honestly? This job made me who I am- it gave me so many skills that I apply to so many different areas of my life every single day. And I just wish more people were given the chance to consider it as a career.
Always keen to encourage folk from marginalised backgrounds and underrepresented groups to get in to this sector because I've also seen first hand how much stronger we get when we have a real mixture of people doing this job.
Thanks to all the groups and people that work hard to make this career path more accessible to more people ๐ Thanks to @homebuildersfederation for organising this, and to everyone who came along.
And shout-out as ever to my local gang @your.home.better who are chipping away at this relentlessly!
If we want to build 1.5 million new homes, that means the construction industry needs more skilled workers.
Women like Claire, who completed the HBF Women into Homebuilding programme, are a huge part of making that happen.
Happy #IWD2026
Last year, home builders provided around ยฃ1.3 billion to support community infrastructureโฆ
From national developers to regional builders, the industry plays a valuable role in the places people live and work โ though often this contribution is overlooked.
Whether itโs funding books for local schools, supporting grassroots football teams (and, for the record, that is not a dig at Southampton FCโฆ), or nurturing local wildlife through thoughtful design, the benefits of home building stretch far beyond bricks and mortar.

Government has announced an โemergencyโ approach to tackle Section 106 Affordable Housing market challenges
The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government has announced a new time-limited approach that will allow the tenure of uncontracted Section 106 units to be varied where no Registered Provider (RP) is willing to buy.
The announcement comes following Government recognition that โchallenges in the Section 106 market leading to a build-up of unsold and uncontracted homes have arisen due to range of factorsโโฆ
โฆ following sustained efforts by our team to increase awareness and understanding of the challenges within the S106 AH market, and the need for intervention.
The scale of the challenge was highlighted both in our 2024 report Bid Farewell and the results of our 2025 Freedom of Information request sent to Local Authorities.
A letter calling for Government action and jointly signed by more than 100 HBF members was also shared with Housing Minister, Matthew Pennycook last summer.
We welcome todayโs announcement and look forward to viewing additional detail thatโll follow.
A full member briefing is available now at hbf.co.uk

Home building in England and Wales generated ยฃ47 billion worth of economic activity last year... But that's only part of the story.
New Homes Week provides a welcome opportunity to highlight the benefits of development beyond bricks and mortar.
With this yearโs New Homes Week campaign a couple of weeks away (2 to 8 February), weโre revisiting the stories we showcased as part of last yearโs campaignโฆ
