LETS TALK ABOUT IT… We constantly get asked what the difference is between Ceremonial Matcha and Everyday Matcha?
Here is the breakdown👇🏽👇🏽
Ceremonial is typically made with higher quality tea leaves than culinary, that easy.
With that being said, matcha has become very popular and anyone can say they use a “ceremonial” grade, but do you even know what a true ceremonial grade consists of?
A True ceremonial grade matcha comes from the tea plant, camellia sinensis. Matcha dedicated plants are shaded in darkness for about 30 days before harvest. This allows for increased levels of theanine, which is an amino acid responsible for the smooth and sweet flavor profile of the ceremonial matcha. The first harvest starts in early May, which is when the young tea leaves are carefully hand picked. The young tea leaves also contain an abundance of chlorophyll, which is why true ceremonial grade matcha has a vibrant green color.
Here’s the next part, tea leaves that are processed as “every day matcha” are harvested during the second harvest. These tea leaves are “older” and have a bolder flavor. Now, bolder and older don’t necessarily mean it’s ‘bad’ or ‘lower quality’ - everyone constantly wants to compare everything and there has to be only one winner and one loser. That won’t be the case here with matcha. Each grade has its own purpose, one just simply needs to figure out which one will be the best option for their intended use.
Do you want to go traditional, basically only matcha and water? Go for the ceremonial.
Do you want to do a latte with a bolder matcha flavor? You can use Everyday matcha, it stands out amazing and you don’t have to use too much to get the perfect matcha flavor + it’s great to use every day and you can save the ceremonial for special moments.
Regardless of which grade you choose, remember that when it comes to consuming matcha, this is your time, so spend it wisely and enjoy every second of it! 💚
