Civil Engineering PhD student YANG Changyi, supervised by Prof. ZHAO Jidong, has been awarded under the 2025 National Natural Science Foundation of China Young Student Basic Research Program (PhD Student) with a grant of RMB 300,000. Established in 2023, the scheme supports early-career scholars in developing independent research, fostering innovation, and strengthening research and project management capabilities through two years of funding. Building on our pioneering work in high-precision CO₂ and methane monitoring, the HKUST-led Multi-Spectral Imaging Carbon Observatory (MUSICO) has reached a major milestone, becoming Hong Kong’s first locally developed scientific payload to be successfully launched into space aboard the Tianzhou-10 cargo mission, heading to China’s Tiangong space station. The MUSICO project is co-led by Prof. SU Hui, Chair Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Global STEM Professor at HKUST, and Prof. ZHANG Limin, Head and Chair Professor of the Department. Prof. ZHAI Chengxing of the Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas serves as the mission system engineer. Congratulations to Dr. Khawar SARFRAZ, Lecturer I in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, on receiving the Thetos Early Career Distinguished Teaching Award 2025–26. Established by Thetos Foundation Hong Kong, the Thetos Distinguished Teaching Award (TDTA) is HKUST’s first award dedicated to recognizing the teaching excellence of teaching track faculty. A plaque unveiling ceremony was recently held to mark the establishment of the HKUST–Li-Ning Joint Laboratory of Sports Science and Technology. Led by Prof. ZHANG Xin, Swire Professor of Aerospace Engineering, and Chair Professor of Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, the joint lab will focus on small scale low noise sports wind tunnel technology, studies on sports performance and equipment functionality, as well as intelligent motion capture and algorithmic modelling of elite athletes’ performance. Prof. Alicia AN from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, together with her postdoctoral fellow Dr. SUN Jiawei, led a research team to develop a multifunctional MXene based membrane that enables freshwater and green hydrogen to be produced simultaneously using solar energy. The integrated system combines desalination and hydrogen generation on a single platform, improving efficiency over conventional approaches. A world’s first in Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) technology! Led by Prof. HSING I-Ming of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) and the Division of Life Science (LIFS), the research team has engineered a first-of-its-kind DNA-guided CRISPR-Cas12a system capable of targeting and cleaving RNA, opening up a wide range of potential clinical applications. HKUST Engineering is pleased to announce Prof. TAN Ping’s appointment as Executive Director (Industry Engagement and Executive Education), effective today May 1, 2026. In his new role, Prof. Tan will spearhead efforts to build strong partnerships with industry leaders and enhance our executive education programs. Prof. Tan is a professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering. Before joining HKUST, he served as Director of the XR Lab at Alibaba DAMO Academy and previously held faculty positions at Simon Fraser University and the National University of Singapore.
