#handtoolhaven2026 is less than a week away. What are you bringing along? These two beautiful chests will be coming with me. Hopefully they will find new owners and not make the return trip 😂

Now I just need to find five more😂. PS&W is one of my favorite vintage toolmakers. Not just because they are my home team, they were based out of Southington, CT, just a few miles north of me, but also because they made great tools. This is an original packing crate for Samson braces, something I haven’t seen before.

If you don't know about @hktoolco you NEED TOO!! Josh has some amazing tools available at awesome prices! He is also what many consider an expert in the whole field of tools! He has been selling tools for the past 20 years and has spent hundreds of hours researching those tools! He even took this a step further and created a database to house this information. He also created the Stanly Bench Plane Dating Flowchart that I have personally used many many times! Best of all, he is very passionate about the Plane Wellness mission and is really excited to help by sponsoring our fundraising event! He will also be one of our guest speakers at the event!! THANK YOU JOSH!!! Here are some of his links: Tools for Sale: /store/index.php Books for Sale: /store/index.php?CATEGORY=B Flow Chart: /old/tools/stanley_bench_plane/start_flowchart.php Database main page: /wiki/Main_Page The event is May 16th and 17th, 2026 in Butler, PA. First time finding one of these. It’s a Charles Fay Sept 23, 1884 patent surface gauge, probably made by J. Stevens. I can’t find any other examples. Has anyone else seen one? #oldtools #machinisttools

A newly discovered handsaw patent for the holidays?🎄 I recently found this saw and only just realized how unique it is. Initial searching uncovered nothing useful, but after some poking around the @uspto archive I found the patent. This is a "combined hack and wood saw" patented Aug 21, 1906 by Thomas Keepfer and made by the Simonds Mfg. Co. The patent indicated that the top teeth are intended to cut through nails and other obstacles. This area of the saw plate is specially hardened and reinforced. Note that the hack teeth are proud of the top of the blade. Also note the reinforcing strip at the bottom of the handle which is unrelated to the patent and only rarely shows up on Simonds saws. I added this patent to the datamp.org database 😁 #handtools #vintagetools

Time lapse videos of the aurorae last night. It was an amazing experience to see them.

It was a busy summer and it went by too fast. I used the Labor Day weekend to do some organization. Along the way I found some edge tools, as you can see. All told, I added about 200 new tools to the list in three days. More coming up as fall tool season kicks off this week. 🎉😁

Calling all panther experts. I need some help with this one. I've seen two variants of this saw: the classic "bellflower" carved panthers and wheat-carved examples like this one. The bellflower models look earlier to me and are definitely the most well-known, probably thanks to the photo on the cover of Garrett Hack's book Classic Hand Tools.  This example was restored by the late great Carl Bilderback. Carl was probably the foremost expert on these saws, but I don't think he ever documented his findings. Carl insisted that this saw's "H.M. Finch" medallion is original and correct. He apparently mentioned that there is at least one other out there with this medallion.  I've discovered who H.M. Finch was and which company used these medallions. It's not Woodrough and McParlin. I want to know if anyone else has a panther with this medallion or any other examples with wheat-carved handles like this one. Any pointers to panther saw documentation or research would also be highly appreciated. This saw is for sale. DM or email me for info.

When I clean up wooden planes I hope to find a maker's mark. This plane surprised me. 😳

This weekend I finished up a deal to buy the last 380 handsaws from Tom Law's wife. For those of you who don't remember him, for many years Tom was the go-to saw sharpening guru for our community. He did a fantastic job at a very reasonable price and was one of the nicest people I've had the pleasure of working with. When he died about 10 years ago he left behind a huge collection of saws. His wife Sandra continued to sell these saws a few at a time at the annual PATINA tool events. Earlier this year Sandra told me she was ready to sell the entire collection as a whole. She wanted to be done with selling saws a few at a time, plus she wanted to reclaim her living room. We worked out the details in the following months. After a long couple of days on the road, I now have all of Tom's remaining saws.. all perfectly restored and sharpened. The collection had been cherry picked over the years but what remains are all exceptional working saws that are ready to be put back to use.
