One of the reasons that drawing from life is so addictive is because it is so damn hard. For every succesful drawing, at least 20 drawings fail, so in the rare cases that I sense that a drawing is going to be good, it can feel quite euphoric.
No Pain, no gain.
By the way, these were actually done with oilpaint, so not sure how to call them. Paintings, drawings, whatever.

New painting!
For the last 8 years our son Dario Hulsing played on a 250 year old Cuypers violin that was loaned to him by a very generous violinist. We brought it back today and to show our gratitude, Dario composed and performed a beautiful solo violin piece. I made a painting for him of the violin itself, with the focus on all the typical discolorizations and little damages in the wood that are the result of musicians playing this fantastic Dutch violin for over 250 years.
Instruments like this are 'living' objects, in the sense that the wood and therefore its sound keeps changing depending on who plays it. The sound that Dario got out of this violin was unique and very beautiful.
Oilpaint on panel 39 x 50 cm

Two weeks ago I made this oilpainting during a 6 hour session with good friends.

The model was Donika Ilieva
Oilpaint on panel - 50 x 38,5 cm.

Tomorrow's paper edition of the NRC Handelsblad will feature illustrations that I made for an essay by Arnon Grunberg about Alma Mahler,
Among her numerous famous lovers, many of them considered geniuses, like Gustav Klimt, Gustav Mahler, and Walter Gropius, there was also a painter, Oskar Kokoschka, who became so obsessed with her that he had someone build a lifesize doll of her, so he could keep her with him long after she was gone from his life. The sstrange doll can still be seen in the Leopold Museum in Vienna.
The article is already online, so you can read it here

I just made some of the last paintings for the Danse macabre project.
In the meantime Studio Autour de Minuit in Paris has finished their wonderful animation. In Budapest the animators from Cinemon Entertainment are still animating beautiful stuff. In Belgium at Vivi Film the compositing by Stijn Calis has started and in Amsterdam Stein Louisse is working on the style transfers for Richard Valk Productions. Andre Ferwerda is making additional models and Mats van Reenen will do the many special effects..
It comes together in a way that surpasses my expectations and probably that of everyone involved. Super exciting!
The release date of Danse Macabre will be 2026.

I just keep painting. And enjoying music.
It's tripping without drugs and without any side effects, apart from dirty hands and clothes and colored spots all over my face.
Music: Turangalîla by Olivier Messiaen (1948)
Some of the new oil paintings that I made for the animated Danse Macabre film, which will be an apocalyptic nightmare about war, set to the Scherzo from Shostakovich' 10th Symphony.
The releasedate of the film is 2026.
This is all oilpaint on wood.
Our son Dario Hulsing just graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the Amsterdam Conservatory with a 9.5
For his final exam, he gave beautiful performances of Bach’s Chaconne and Prokofiev’s 1st Violin Sonata.
For the last 4,5 years Dario studied violin with Maria Milstein, a wonderful violinist and teacher, and he will continue his study at the Amsterdam Conservatory with tutor Mathieu van Bellen.
Please enjoy this recording of the Chaconne!

The live-action shoot for Danse Macabre last week went very smooth thanks to everyone involved.
I amost forgot how complex a shoot for an animated film is and how hard and fun it is to direct it on a set with a dedicated crew.
We filmed musicians and stuntactors for reference, and it all had to be in complete sync with the score of Shostakovich' tenth symphony. The preparation for that completely fried my brains.
Many thanks to cameraman Freek Zonderland, lightman Johan Hoitink, producer Richard Valk, musicians Dario Hulsing, Marcel Wheatley, Nuria Tello Nieto, Kajetan Puczko, @nefilim__ Juana Garcia,
Stuntactors Chiel Christiaans, Arjen, Roxy de Beauvoir Watson And many thanks to @carmeneberz for helping me with the extraction of parts from the score

Timelapse video of a painting I made during my stay as 'artist in residence' at the Museumsquartier in Vienna, April 2025.
This is 50 hours of work compressed in 2,5 minutes.
I edited it to music that I composed and orchestrated for my film Junkyard, performed by a small orchestra in 2012.
Special water- and glass instruments by Thomas Bloch.
Solo violin by Carmen Eberz.
