Fresh off the plane, and a mandatory stop at Publix for groceries, we finally got to the crib. 246 Northwest 49th St. Flat Studios. The Safehouse. It had been about 8 months, but no matter how much time had passed it always felt like home. Sitting in the living room (which also served as the studio, game room, and home theatre) looking around, smiling and thinking about all of the moments we've shared in this room Davey asks me, "so what we doing this week?". Tbh, even though the trip had been planned for a couple months me and @jvinnett had been working so hard on a @townapparel.co project for so long that I had no time to think about music. "Man I don't even know", I told him. In that moment I realized that it had been years since I took time to sit down and just think. Not have thoughts, but actually THINK. As a person who is naturally thoughtful about too many things I often confuse having thoughts to actually thinking. That day I was forced to sit back and get in touch w/ myself and ask myself some basic questions. "how do you really feel?" "what's actually on your mind?" "what do you wanna do?" Simple questions but a lot to unpack when you haven't asked yourself those questions in a while. I hadn't felt that lost in a while tbhh. I was gonna be down there 14 days. I had beats, songs, and a concept for an album; but I had no plan. I had to figure it out. 10 days, a beat from @heartbreakseason & @iammedisin and a lot of whisky later we got this... I hope you enjoyed it.

Single Cover Art for Smoky Bourbon 🖼 @jvinnett 📸 @pillojack If you've ever been around me and @iammedisin you probably know that our conversations be all over the place, and if you've ever had the privilege of really talking to bro I'm sure your conversations were probably the same... The beautiful thing about our working relationship is that it is just like our personal relationship. We'll sit down, start working on a mix or something, and next thing you know Davey has a guitar or saxophone in his hands and I'm on the other side of the room like, "woah that goes crazy. what if you did this..." As if he actually needs my help 😂 Whenever I go to visit Davey the mornings are always the same. I wake up first, Davey eventually gets up and makes some coffee or tea, we sit and talk about God, and the conversation snowballs from there. We'll talk about society, art, religion, conspiracy theories. We even spent one morning ranking the Matrix movies, and led to us watching them all in one day. It can often feel like a waste of a limited amount time spending hours talking about a bunch of nothing and making jokes. But when we finally get to work it's like everything we've been talking about gets dumped into whatever we make. That's exactly what happened w/ Smoky Bourbon. Sitting on the porch in the middle of my 11th night in Miami w/ the neighbors blasting 'If You Think You're Lonely Now' I just started journaling about everything that I had been feeling. It was the culmination of a week of dialog and observations that turned into a song that was never supposed to exist. Moral of the Story: Trust Yourself Trust The Process & Have Fun w/ It

Single Cover for Smoky Bourbon Instrumental. 🖼 @jvinnett 📸 @pillojack The Smoky Bourbon Instrumental originally was actually not made w/ the intent of me making a song to it. I had went to Miami to spend some time w/ @iammedisin and work on a bunch of songs that were for an album I was working on at the time. I was so lost and jaded both personally and professionally that we ended up spending the first week just working on other people's projects and playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2. After about 10 days of editing and mixing we just wanted to chill and make some music. Not songs, music. We had been listening to Japanese Jazz for 4-5 days straight and one night we looked at each other and was like "wanna make something?" Medisin picked up his guitar, and the rest was history. The reason I love the Smoky Bourbon song so much is bc it was never supposed to exist. I was just trying to find some peace and joy w/ life again. There was no plan, no expectation, and no real vision for what this instrumental would become beyond what we were doing in that moment. All I knew is that while we were creating, it was healing me. And that's why it had to be in the pack. I felt like it was a spirit in the music that words could never communicate. Originally I called it MEDItate bc that's what it's for. MEDITATION. You can be still, be shopping, be working, working out, or whatever. Throw this on in the background of any regular day activity and let it do what it's gonna do. ps. s/o to @calebsean for playing some additional 🎹 for us! I had been wanting to work w/ Caleb for years, and even though it's not the type of collaboration we always talked about it makes me happy we finally got to create together. 🤝🏾
