What do you do when you have multiple dramatic scenes to shoot but no gaffer and limited time?
The solution isn't more gear, it's a smarter approach. By shaping the space with opposing light sources, the location does a lot of the heavy lifting. Hard and soft zones emerge naturally, faces move between calm and tension and depth appears without constant resets.
With intentional choices and creative thinking, a simple setup can still give you real flexibility.
A huge shout out to @bysophiebandera for capturing some rare BTS footage of Hing!

Take Two Magic
Anticipation.
Grounded in prior blocking — knowing when the actor will rise or drop,
and being ready on the gimbal before it happens.
Precision.
Working in step with the focus puller to track movement between characters.
Communication.
Camera, performance and focus moving as one.
It looks like magic.
but it’s preparation, experience and trust.

Good work is rarely solo.
Grateful to be in the cinema last night with the crew behind the short films @thelastreadingfilm and @proteansshortfilm and to see the work land on screen.
A special shout-out to the Sunshine Coast contingent and the ongoing support of @screencollective

Proteans is the first film to be shot entirely on the @screencollective back lot earlier this year. Big thanks to @mirkogrillini and @apacbrisbane for bringing this production to the Sunshine Coast and employing Sunny Coast Crew. With 3-phase power now installed to the sheds we were able to light up our scenes magnificently! The film is in final post production and will be ready for the festival circuit within days!
