This is probably the saddest photo I’ve ever taken. Thursday, December 12, 2024, we worked a show that wrapped up early & after finishing a post-show cocktail, Kat said, “Welp, I’m going to Taco Bell.” I laughed & walked her out, gave her a hug goodbye & said, “Now that Sandy’s back, you guys aren’t going to be needing me for a while…so, I guess I’ll see you in late February.” Kat responded, “Nooooooo…come out tomorrow for the ugly Christmas sweater party, I’ll buy all your drinks.” I told her I might. Having no idea this would be the last time I’d see her & we went our separate ways. I don’t know this to be true, but I might be the last person who spoke with her in real life. I didn’t go to the party, because I woke up the next day feeling like I was fighting something off. I took it easy & stayed in.
The following day, I wake up to a missed call & voicemail from Mike. He rarely calls & never leaves a voicemail…something must have gone down. Call him back, news told & I’m floored in disbelief. We gathered at Small’s later that night when this photo was taken & it all hit me. I didn’t realize what had happened the night prior. That she didn’t show up for her gig. That her turntables were setup waiting for her & understandably, no one could muster the willingness to take them down as we all gathered to process what happened.
Everyone knows Kat better than I & has known her for longer. But, we became really good friends quickly, having so much in common. I’d certainly put her towards the top of the list of one of the raddest people I’ve ever met. Thank you everyone who came out to the memorial. Thanks to Mike, Natalie, Martin & everyone who shared their memories, donated their time, energy & resources to bring everyone together. What a special night. #closure
