SCALE
An exhibition by himHallows
Open 03 — 31 August.
Tuesday — Saturday, 10am to 4pm
@altogetherotherwise 6 — 10 Hanover St
Manchester, NOMA, M4 4BB (5 mins from Shudehill Bus Station)
From shipping to energy to leisure to etc; SCALE is a series of large, repeating patterns revealing these infrastructural systems’ extent and reach. Each pattern tile represents a single scene and our experience of it. Stepping back, the tile repeats at every edge, part of a much larger system with logically absurd boundaries.

Shipping Containers - Container Port
Study II
5 colour risograph
Set of 4 x A4 prints (creates an A2 size print)
Edition of 25 Sets
£40 per set, link to shop in bio.
Another step in testing out patterns built for the risograph; mainly to see what interesting artifacts come out of alignment with heavy layering and how this affects patterning up at a later stage. I’ve also wanted to do another shipping container pattern for a while, working to a more detailed scale and using real world livery. This pattern is composed of A4 size tiles that can be scaled up into any A size.

A second study of tower cranes, this pattern focused more on the cranes than the skyscrapers. Inspired by the increasingly dense clusters of cranes that are continuing to appear around a ceaselessly developing Manchester.

Pattern website and webshop refresh.
In the last few months I have been planning a refresh for the pattern site, the priority to improve how the patterns are displayed on their own pages (the homepage I’m still happy with so I also wanted to make sure I could replicate that).
The new website has been built using @framer . This has allowed me to make the tiled pattern backgrounds the main event, with very little loss in resolution and allowing for a much better designed side column when viewing on a desktop screen.

Side A + Side B +
Artwork as part of the @brits Art Trail (stop number 7 on the map!) installed at @manchestercraft .
A hefty thank you to @stan_chow and @bandwagonpress for asking me to take part, and to @wildinart for the big install, really happy with the spot and feel it’s a good fit for the pattern.
This pattern is about how physical media formats are still going strong and coexisting in the age of digital streaming. Several of last and this year’s Brit award artists released physical albums, not just on vinyl, but on CD and cassette too. The legacy of physical media can be heard in how artists curate their track listings, setting the listener’s journey through an album, an act even more important in the age of algorithm generated playlists.
Original tile created as a composite of scanned A3 risograph prints formatted for large scale CMYK print.
The trail’s on till mid March and there’s another 20 artworks to see, link to map on the BRITs website.

Engine House 10
Animated digital poster
This month the Engine House Collective turns 10 years old and we’re opening the studio on the 23rd and 24th for an exhibition and soiree to celebrate!
The vibe is very much a drop in and hang out for however long you want. Refreshments on arrival for guests and as ever, BYOB if you’re there for a good time. We’ll be in the House from 2pm till late (and might even think about the pub after).

Speaking in 2025
To finish up the year I thought I would mention the two speaking events I was particularly happy to be part of (talking patterns).
More recently was @pechakucha_mcr ; I delivered a tongue in cheek talk about patterns, listing 10 infrastructure subjects I’ve (nearly) created patterns from. Starting with the most interesting (tower cranes) and finishing with the most boring (stacked pallets)
And previously @alpacapatterns ; Over summer I submitted a paper to the conference about the rules I use within my pattern work and how this has evolved my pattern practice. This led to a talk in September in which I was to present the paper to an audience (Link to paper in bio).
Thank you to both + and + for the opportunities to talk!

Onshore / Offshore
Two patterns around wind turbines and their work to keep a society powered. These patterns were previously part of the Exhibition ‘SCALE’, and now formatted for home display.
Onshore risograph printed in blue, green and orange inks.
Offshore risograph printed in blue, green and red inks.
Available as an A3 print or as a 4x A4 tiled print. Link in bio for shop details.
Text Reads:
“Fields of wind turbines, onshore and offshore, stand sentinel. Widely spread, they read as both monoliths and forest, a single system distributed across land and sea. Settling into the landscape as a new layer of infrastructure, part of a future that feels both present and necessary.”
With thanks to @jcalpickard for help writing the pattern statement!

Reservoir
A pattern about soft drinks in chiller cabinets.
Risograph printed in purple, blue, red and yellow inks
Available as an A3 print or as a 4x A4 tiled print. Link in bio for shop details.
Text Reads:
“There are shops, like the one on Manchester’s Oldham St, that exist to quench every conceivable thirst and craving. To stand at the chiller cabinet and be overwhelmed with choice, knowing that somewhere in all that cold view is …”

Day five of the Engine house twelve days of Christmas advent!
Fifth day of sharing work by some of the inhabitants of the engine house building up to the @islingtonmill winter open day on Saturday thirteenth ❄️❄️❄️
Next up we have the king of concrete @himhallows
Paul has a plethora of beautiful risograph prints available in his shop
In The Mouth Of Madness
Poster for the Halloween movie, fancy dress and chilli dog party at the Engine House.
A3 risograph poster printed in blue, fluorescent pink and fluorescent orange
John Carpenter’s lovecraftian horror about insanity and reality all wrapped up in a story of a missing writer and the mania that surrounds his books. The movie is made all the more fun by Sam Neill chewing absolutely every piece of scenery he’s put in front of, a great film for ‘Neill Heads’.
(The Nostromo themed fancy dress costume is unrelated to the film, I just wanted to make a chestburster holding a tiny hotdog)

Join us at PechaKucha Night Manchester Vol. 41 where we’re talking all about Side Quests. We’ll be at @fairfieldsocialclubmcr on 20 November 2025.
Our next speaker is himHallows (@himhallows ), the working name of Paul Hallows, an artist and multi-disciplinary creative practitioner based at the Engine House in Salford’s Islington Mill.
Paul’s studio practice involves hand drawn illustration, design, prototyping, animation, small scale builds and teaching design (currently a guest lecturer of Graphic Design at the University of Salford)
Paul’s art practice is focused on creating illustrated patterns, mainly about infrastructure, which are built by repeating and joining together risograph printed tiles. Each pattern tile represents a single scene and our experience of it. Stepping back, the tile repeats at every edge, part of a much larger system with logically absurd boundaries.
