The Electronic Sackbut is the first voltage-controlled synthesizer designed and built by Hugh Le Caine in 1945. Ingenium at the Canadian Science and Technology Museum have built the first ever replica of this synthesizer (*The Electronic Sackbut Reconstruction Project) and have given Festival Fantôme permission to feature this instrument artifact in Gayle Young's improvised set. This will be the Electronic Sackbut Reconstruction Project's first official concert to the public since the 1950's! And who better than to publicly unveil this electronic beast other than Gayle Young, who is responsible for bringing Hugh Le Caine to the attention of the world with her biography on Le Caine "The Sackbut Blues: Hugh Le Caine, Pioneer in Electronic Music".
This is not an event to miss out on, presented Nov 1 in the afternoon at Studio Cimetière for the festival. Come check out Gayle and the Electronic Sackbut along with Maschinenmensch opening for the super rare double bill of Via Mardot and NT Fan (Trey Spruance). This is a video we made back in 2006 for the song "Oh My" from the HILOTRONS album "Bella Simone", also released in 2006. It has lived on YouTube for almost 20yrs! Petr Maur shot it on Super 8mm film at the Concorde Tavern and Motel in Vanier, ON.
Even though I was the vocalist in the band, I hated my voice on the song and convinced our guitar player Paul Hogan to sing the song, along with Sarah Hallman singing the duet part.
I recorded it in my basement at 53 Preston St., Ottawa and Philip Shaw Bova mixed and mastered it at Bova Sound. It features Jordy Walker on drums and slide acoustic guitar, Damian Sawka on Farfisa Professional organ and me on the other instruments.
