“I love the open road feeling of prep; those are the moments where you can run wild with dreams. There's no bad idea, there's no wrong answer, you're just in the wonder phase building it from the ground up. It’s all possible at that point. Collaborating with a director and the crew is my favorite part of the process. I find that through collaboration the ideas only get more realized. I love the opportunity to have the kernel of a plan and tumble and hone it through conversations with the team, encouraging us to enhance it with collective ideas to make it even stronger. It all really takes shape through this process for me, 10 out of 10 times. I don’t feel you can make the best work in a vacuum. Collaboration is my favorite part of the adventure — relying on your team to build and craft a plan together. When I’m able to speak to young filmmakers, I try to stress that the importance of choosing your team wisely is so critical. When you have a family of like-minded individuals that are able to really see and work towards a shared goal together, there’s a feeling of invincibility.”
Visionary #DOP Hillary Spera (
@hillaryspera ) takes us #behindthescenes of her career, detailing her ingenious approach to prep, lensing, & collaboration, and her partnership with #Panavision.
“I feel the project that makes you the most nervous and afraid are the ones that ultimately push you forward the farthest and allow you to grow the most," Spera continues. "Those are the right ones. I try to constantly seek and choose the hardest opportunities with the most challenges, whether it is something I haven't done yet or one that forces myself to learn to be comfortable with being outside of my comfort zone whenever possible.
I deeply love working with Panavision and the opportunities that our collaboration provides — especially when I’m questioning, 'Is this possible?' the answer's always, 'Yes, we'll find a way.'" [cont'd in comments]
