There’s always been a hybridity in my practice — moving between painting and ceramics, painting and weaving, painting and film. Not to combine mediums for the sake of it, but to think through painting by bringing another logic into contact with it. To see what painting does when it has to negotiate with something else.
For this body of work, I wanted to dress a Handsome Woman. Thinking about that as a style for a painting. The polarities that run through my making — care and destruction, tightly wound and loosely hung, torn and layered — became a way of thinking about attitude in clothing, and attitude in paint.
The palette moves between the assertive and the tender. Warm ochres and burnt oranges pushed against cool grays and bone white. Deep forest greens holding soft blush and powder blue. Black cutting through — not as absence but as anchor.
The vertical lines that structure these paintings are like a spine, a placket, a trouser break. And where the horizontal interrupts — that’s where the dressing happens. A tucked shirt, a loosely dropped scarf, a pant leg cuffed just once. The curve arriving inside the grid. It’s not accident and it’s not total control. It’s a decision about where to let something go soft, where to let it drop, where to hold the line.
The painting is getting dressed.

It’s been a week…on the road in Raliegh, Winston Salem, NC mountains and around town. New works arriving daily for our INTRO group exhibition opening first week of June. Dying over Tuesday’s install of 2 collages by Selena Beaudry in a collector’s master bedroom! #hidellbrooks #art #selenabeaudry #collage
Cannot wait to introduce Anne Leone’s incredible paintings in our INTRO exhibition opening in June. Leone was born in Los Angeles, California and lives in Berkley, Massachusetts and Brooklyn, New York. She is a Professor Emeritus of UMass Dartmouth, where she taught from 1987-2007. Leone’s subject matter is the human figure suspended in water. Beyond its metaphorical significance — for life, birth, and purity – she is fundamentally interested in how swimmers move expressively and freely when released from the corporeal bounds of gravity. Preview of the works can been seen on our website under Anne’s artist tab. #hidellbrooks #art #anneleone
We are less than a year away from THE SEEN by artist Robyn Rich. 100 eye portraits will be shown together Spring 2027 at Hidell Brooks. We are so ecstatic to be a part of this project and Robyn is still accepting submissions. If you would like to be a part of the community send a hi res image of your eye to [email protected].
