I’m absolutely thrilled to announce that ‘Keita and the Dolphins’ as told by storyteller Ibrahima Sory Camara, in the Republic of Guinea, has been long listed for the World Illustration Awards 2025 @worldillustrationawards ! This was a special, highly collaborative, picture book project, designed to raise awareness for the critically endangered Atlantic Humpback Dolphin in West Africa! On #WorldAcquaticAnimalDay, we celebrate the animals that live in our oceans 🌊 Setsuko and the Song of the Sea by @fionawritesbooks and @hgray_illustrator is all about how we can keep our oceans safe for every creature living under the waves. Fiona Barker wrote The Song of the Sea for marine biologist and illustrator, Howard Gray, so he could paint a whale and utilise his awesome skills creating underwater scenes. At the time, she also undertook the Marine Conservation Society’s challenge to go plastic-free in July 2017, which turned out to be the start of a life-changing journey. Fiona wanted to pair the whale in the story with an inspirational human character, and she could think of none more so than the ama-san. Revered as ‘mothers of the sea’, these strong women have been diving without breathing equipment in the cold waters off the Shima Peninsula for over 2000 years. #illustration #whales #oceans #kidsbooks #kidsbookstagram #picturebooks

When @hgray_illustrator was younger he was always content with a few sheets of paper and whatever else he could lay his hands upon to make his mark. Growing up, Howard was also captivated by animals and nature, a fascination probably fuelled by living in some interesting parts of the world as work took his parents from place to place. Howard pursued Art throughout school but, after much deliberation, he decided to pursue a career in science; completing a BSc in Zoology and then a PhD in Arabian bottlenose dolphin genetics! This research took Howard to Oman where he worked with a team studying the amazing diversity of marine life in the Arabian region. Now a doctor in genetics, Howard has returned to his dream career of becoming an illustrator. Howard’s work is predominantly digital, but invariably starts by putting pencil to paper. He works in Adobe Photoshop, for the most part, but is also comfortable in Illustrator.
