Born from the nostalgia of carnival masks, symbols of a Dominican Independence celebrated on February 27th (from Haiti, not Spain which happened August 16th) this shoot confronts a fractured identity. Dominican culture is the tapestry of Taino, European and African roots, yet our Blackness is still dismissed. We see it in xenophobic deportations, in the haunting memory of things like the ‘perejil’ test, and in leaders who exploited division for power. It’s time to acknowledge the fullness of who we are.

My mom has always been a shoulder for many. She’s opened her home to raise 25 foster kids over the course of 18 years, adopted 2 and is currently raising 3 sisters now, alongside her other kids and still sends tanks of school supplies to kids in the DR. Mi mamá siempre ha sido un apoyo para muchos. Ha abierto su hogar para criar a 25 niños de acogida a lo largo de 18 años, adoptó a dos y ahora cría a tres hermanas, junto con sus otros hijos, y sigue enviando montones de útiles escolares a niños de República Dominicana. Quiero que siga dando sin tener que asumir los gastos ella sola.
