I’ve got this picture of myself — what must’ve been around 3 years old — wearing nothing but a Dallas Cowboys helmet and a diaper, with a Yamaha guitar hanging around my neck, trying to sing along to a Ricky Skaggs record no doubt. My face is basically mashed up against this giant stereo system (back when stereos were built like living room furniture), pressed in as close as a boy can get. I look like I’m trying to crawl inside the speakers and live there like it’s my own personal hobbit hole. When it comes to music, I’ve never thought of it as a spectator sport. I wanna be in it. Right in the middle of it. Singing and playing from the tips of my tippy toes. And by the grace of God, I’m doing it. The wild part is how fast the time flies. I’m a couple decades into making music full-time now, and somehow I still feel like I’m just getting started. I’ve written songs for all kinds of artists, from legends like George Strait and Kenny Rogers to chart-toppers like Tim McGraw and Blake Shelton, and Stephen Wilson Jr.. I’ve made records with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys and with my hero Ricky Skaggs. I’ve toured with Mumford & Sons and Bruce Hornsby.
And still, it feels like my dreams are only now starting to fully come into focus.
Since moving to Nashville, I’ve followed a lot of blueprints and watched a few skyscrapers rise into the clouds. But lately, it feels like time to go off-script. I don’t just think of myself as a songwriter or an artist or a producer anymore. I think “music man” probably fits best. And for whatever reason, that feels true to me. Guess we’ll see where it all goes. I could sure use some of y’all beside me along the way. I may miss the bullseye now and then, but I do believe my aim is true Big love to all those who’ve been here since what feels like day one, and welcome to those just climbing aboard now. Had a time and a half at @delaneyramsdellmusic and @anistonpatemusic ‘s Texas Too Shindig @theunderdognashville this week! (Both gals have new music out -you should check out !) Wrote this one about my wife Kristi a few years back. Being married to her has been the greatest adventure of my life. She is like a masterpiece of a painting; you see something new and fascinating every time you take the time to look. K doesn’t fancy herself a singer so I ask one of my very favorite voices to come in and help me bring this one to life: Delaney Ramsdell. I made sure I sang first -didn’t wanna have to follow her ! Just too good.
Hope yall like it. It’s a bit of an outlier in the record but it s also one of my favorites I’ve ever written. Getting to sing it at the Bluebird Cafe the other night was pure magic. And to have my brother Adam Wright there adding some tasty licks was just perfect.

The beautiful girl i married in a little baptist church in Burleson, Texas more than twenty years ago, is not the same one I’m laying eyes on over the brim of my coffee cup this morning. We always had chemistry. Now we got history. The girl has become a woman. The short story, a novel. She is a deeper well. Look away for a few minutes, then return your gaze, and you’ll see much more than ya saw the first time. The loveliest of waves has become a tsunami that I’m more than happy to be swept up in. Is it hard to stay married when at times the other person can be like trying to catch a kaleidoscope of butterflies with your bare hands. You should ask her. I do know, it’s hard to sleep walk thru marriage. Can’t be done. Must be present to win. She keeps me there. The mystery is where the good stuff is.
That’s what inspired this little number.
