i'm attributing all messed up notes to the fact that i fell down the stairs today lol
seeing everything happening has just reminding me that i've been sitting on this one for months when i learned that someone i grew up with joined the air force. it's also my first attempt at a quasi blues song. as someone who grew up in church i often wonder if where all of us are as adults are who our parents prayed for us to be, hence the song's informal title of "praying mothers/praying fathers". i'm angry!
here are the lyrics:
son of a preacher man
came back home to the city
makes his daddy proud
works at a good company
but the grandson of a nurse
has just signed up
to kill the free
are we who our mothers
wanted us to be?
are we who our mothers
prayed for us to be?
daughter of a deacon man
grew up to be a man of mage
when they were a little girl
they dreamed of singing on stage
but the young man
just signed up to kill
and put people in cages
are we who our fathers
wanted us to be?
are we who our fathers
prayed for us to be?
oh, lord,
i don't know what to do
he's gonna kill from above
for a lying man who hates him too
what if, lord, what if he kills you and me?
if the young man dies following evil orders,
who will write his obituary?
are we who our mothers,
are we who our fathersโ
son of a preacher man
came back home to the city
and saw his brother in christ get
get shot down, shot down for the land of the free
and the daughter of a deacon man
just can't help but scream
are we who our mothers wanted us to be?
are we who our fathers prayed for us to be?
are we who our mothers wanted us to be?
are we who they wanted us to be?

i've got a new kind of picture for you
farm dirt, dirty floor, wet floor keeps my feet warm,
quarter water, dollar fifty, it's been a great year for haters.

happy new year
if i don't have enough pictures with you let's take more next year :)
this year i celebrate him in the pictures he took, in the places he would have loved to go, and the people he would have loved to meet. in the jokes he would have loved, in good times and bad. in music he would have loved to hear, and in things in life he would have wanted to share.
happy birthday dad.
