First year MFA student Rafael Caro is working on an autobiographical series that use material as a language of metaphor, memory, and connection. These mixed-media portraits of family members are an attempt to hold together what distance tries to pull apart. #screenprint #mixedmedia #portrait #familyhistory #contemporaryart

For her thesis project, second year MFA student Meaghan Fleming is building steel dogs adorned with intricately knotted embroidery floss and surrounded by an oversize friendship bracelet with steel charms. This work explores the complexities of female adolescence by placing materials traditionally associated with strength, permanence, and industry in direct conversation with soft, domestic, and craft-based processes, disrupting hierarchies between hard and soft, masculine and feminine, public and private.  #contemporarysculpture #contemporarycraft #labor #installationart #womenwhoweld

Herron is so proud of second year MFA student Joan Wyand, who was awarded the Sherry Queener Graduate Student Excellence Award. This campus-wide award is one of the highest recognitions for achievement awarded to a graduate or professional student on our campus. The award honors the many contributions of our former Associate Dean, Dr. Sherry Queener, during her term leading the Graduate School at IUPUI. Dr. Queener presented the award to Joan on stage, and they were able to get to know each other a little after the ceremony. Congratulations, Joan!!

Herron MFA Conflux Exhibition opening tonight! Drawing from the intimate relationships artists forge with themselves, their spirituality, gender and or ethos, we navigate the dichotomy between one’s sense of self and something grander. Each artwork serves as a lens and a vessel, which combined with their peers, act as a kaleidoscope that reorients personal narratives to a ‘larger than’ framework. Conflux is a merging and gathering of these artists, students, and their practice. Join us in celebrating the vibrant array of voices emerging from the Herron School of Art MFA program, March 15th, at NE Sculpture Gallery Factory. #mfa #herronschoolofartanddesign #iuiherron #contemporaryartists
