Seven buttons because seven is the number of defense, of fortification, of the classical virtues and the cardinal sins; the inverted triangle of the wrap doing what military tailoring has always done — making the chest broader, the waist narrower, creating the V-silhouette of the mesomorphic ideal, the body as it appears in recruitment posters and regimental portraits, shoulders wide and waist tight.

THE PEGU JACKET

The Pegu Club opens next to my friend’s apartment. I read about it in New York Mag and the name sticks because it belongs to a part of the world I know. I was too young to get in, but I walked by it often. That’s how myths are made: repetition and a closed door.

On the way back to the Governor’s Residence, I ask the driver to take a detour down Zegawar Street. The Pegu Club stood behind a locked gate, patient in its decay. Two stories of dark teak, shutters hanging open, the building listing slightly, as if tired of standing.
The places are gone. All that remains is the ache of wanting to look inside.
