HAPPY MANITOBA DAY! 🦬🍁🌲
On May 12, 1870, 156 years ago, Manitoba officially became the fifth province to join the Canadian Confederation with the passing of the Manitoba Act. The Manitoba Act established a Métis province, granting title to lands on the Assiniboine and Red Rivers. We acknowledge that we are located on the original lands of Anishinaabeg, Ininiwak, Anisininewuk, Dakota Oyate, Dene and Inuit, and on the National Homeland of the Red River Métis.
May 12th is recognized annually as “Manitoba Day”, a time to celebrate our province’s rich history, over 100,000 lakes and waterways, the largest mature elm tree urban forest in North America, diverse wildlife, historic architecture and built heritage, and the many cultures that make Manitoba special.
Celebrate Manitoba Day with us by downloading the full FREE kids’ activity booklet linked below! Filled with colouring pages, trivia, fun facts, bingo and more, this printable activity book is perfect for kids of all ages.

Kennedy House is a rare 1866 Gothic Revival house built with local fieldstone for William Kennedy, a Métis fur trader, arctic explorer, entrepreneur, and political trailblazer. Originally called Maple Grove, the home was built on lot 63 in St. Andrew’s Parish (now 417 River Road in the Rural Municipality of St. Andrews), a property that Kennedy inherited from his mother, Aggathas Bear. Constructed by stonemason Duncan McRae, who also built St. Andrew’s-on-the-Red Anglican Church and Old Kildonan Presbyterian Church, the two and a half storey home was a major stylistic departure from the plain Georgian style homes in the area.
Kennedy House was a peaceful family retreat on the banks of the Red River until it was sold in 1892. After changing ownership several times, being expanded and renovated, the home operated as the unofficial “Red River House Museum” before it was purchased by the Province of Manitoba in 1980. Some conservation work was completed on the house and grounds, and the “Captain Kennedy Tea House” opened in the glass veranda, with a museum in the rest of the building.
The building was abruptly closed in April of 2015 due to structural concerns. While there was initially a two and a half year timeline for repairs, Kennedy House sat untouched, vacant and decaying. Thanks to the hard work of the Kennedy House Renewal Committee and the heritage community, advocating for the house’s conservation, in December of 2021 the provincial government finally announced the first phase of the Kennedy House Restoration Project would begin. Now, five years later, the Heritage Tea Room is set to reopen in the house, allowing the historic building to begin serving its community once more.
