My name is Karl Hildebrandt, I am the fourth son of Kurt Hildebrandt, the founder of Anbessa pharmacy. He came from exile in Denmark to assist in the establishment of modern medical facilities in Ethiopia on the recommendation of David Hall, one of the advisors of Emperor Haile Selassie.
I came here in 1949, and have been married to a beautiful Ethiopian women for 45 years. Currently I am a business man acting as the director of Anbessa pharmacy, by profession I am a chemist, pharmacist and botanist.
When we started working, we were in charge of supplying medical resources to the whole country. I am here following in the footsteps of my father. Our time here has included some painful experiences due to the dramatic political changes which loomed over the Ethiopian horizon during the last decennia. I have stayed for such a long time that I now consider myself an Ethiopian, consequently everything which happens in Ethiopia concerns me. The truth is I am not disappointed in Ethiopia, I believe in Ethiopia, I can’t never deny my past and no one should.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the German chancellor Angela Merkel have discussed about preserving Anbessa Pharmacy, so we were optimistic about preventing the building from being demolished. We sincerely hope that the prime minister will take some action, before the Kebele authorities return and start demolishing it.
