This is more than a policy announcement — it is a historic step toward menstrual dignity and equity in Jamaica.
HerFlow Foundation is proud to stand alongside the Government of Jamaica and UNICEF in launching the National Menstrual Health Equity Initiative, a transformative partnership that will help thousands of girls access menstrual products, education, and the support they need to thrive.
For years, we have been at the forefront of the advocacy for menstrual health to be recognized as a matter of dignity, education, and opportunity.
Today, we celebrate progress, partnership, and the collective commitment to ensuring that no girl is left behind because of her period.

Spent the morning at Papine High School in collaboration with the Kiwanis Club of JBF Kingston, where we distributed menstrual products and engaged students in an important conversation about menstrual health and hygiene.
Including boys in conversations about periods is essential to breaking the stigma and shame surrounding menstruation. We remain committed to ensuring that all students have access to accurate information and resources so they can make responsible, informed decisions and help create a more supportive and understanding environment for everyone.

I will say something many of my male colleagues in politics will not say out loud.
A young girl in Jamaica should never have to choose between buying a pack of sanitary napkins and eating. And no girl in this country should be missing school because she cannot afford menstrual products. But that is exactly what is happening.
The numbers are difficult to read. One in four girls in our low-income communities miss school during their period because they do not have the products they need. Across broader research, about 44% of Jamaican girls have experienced period poverty. Only 30% of our public schools provide free menstrual products. A pack of napkins runs between $250 and $600 — for families on PATH living on less than $1,300 a day, that is a real and impossible choice.
So we are doing something about it.
This year the Ministry of Health and Wellness is launching the National Menstrual Health Equity Initiative, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Youth, Skills and Information, HerFlow, and UNICEF.
A J$50 million pilot over 18 months. Eight schools selected for their high concentration of PATH-registered girls. 2,000 girls reached directly with menstrual hygiene kits and proper education. WASH improvements in the schools. HPV vaccinations. Personal hygiene support. HIV and STI prevention woven in.
And critically, the work will not stop with the girls. Boys, teachers, parents, and school health staff will be part of the education sessions too. Because the silence and stigma around menstruation is part of what keeps the problem in place.
A multi-sectoral Technical Working Group, co-chaired by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, will run the pilot and produce an evaluation that will guide the islandwide rollout to follow.
To the mothers and grandmothers and aunties who have been quietly buying pads for the girls on their lane for years…thank you. The state is stepping up to meet you where you have been standing for too long alone.
No girl in Jamaica should miss school because of her period. Period.
