My passion for diversity and inclusion is driven by a desire for everyone to have their own voice, whether it be through books, television, or other media. I believe it’s important that all people of all races, abilities, disabilities, genders, etc. are able to see themselves represented and included.

Open up the #crudgate! Kid lit authors: Show us your beautiful “cruddy” books in the comments. All crud is welcome here!
For context: The current National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature was quoted making this statement in his latest book.
“I have a nagging fear that children’s literature suffers from a slightly higher crud percentage than literature as a whole…maybe more like 94.7 percent of kids’ books are crud.”

One of my favorite graduation gifts for kids is a book. I like to give something they can grow with, come back to, and carry into their next chapter.
From Pre-K to college grads, there’s a story for every milestone. These books affirm kids, celebrate them and how far they’ve come and remind them their journey is just getting started.
Enjoy these graduation alternatives to Oh, The Places You’ll Go and let me know if you found something new.
So tell me in the comments…who are you celebrating this graduation season? 👇🏾

If this book list could catch a flight, it’d be headed straight to Jamaica.
With Caribbean Heritage Month coming up in June, this is your sign to start building a book stack that celebrates the beauty, flavor, and rhythm of Jamaican culture.
From the food-filled pages of Granny’s Kitchen, to the everyday island adventures in The Blue Pickup, these stories wrap you up like a warm breeze and a home-cooked meal.
And I couldn’t forget to include real-life icons like Bob Marley, whose music still speaks to generations, Usain Bolt, who turned speed into history, and Olive Morris, who showed us what it means to stand firm in truth and justice..
So if you’re looking for a meaningful way to prepare for Caribbean Heritage Month start here.
You can find this categorized list (and so many more) linked in my bio under my online bookshops.

At the Cookout by @ariadelsole has me ready to grab a plate, find my seat, and stay outside ALL day. You can feel the joy jumping off every page in this book.
The kids are outside playing double dutch and hopscotch, the grown folks are deep in Spades, dominoes, and Uno… and everybody’s asking the same question…Is the food ready yet?”
This book is a whole vibe. It’s a love letter to summertime, family, and being together in a way that just feels like home.
If you grew up going to cookouts… you already know. It’s giving: “stay outside till the streetlights come on” energy.
Adding this to your summer reading stack is a no-brainer.

Lately, I’ve been a little quieter on here and a lot more present in real life.
More reading. More teaching. More writing. More just being.
This beautiful new picture book by Anne Wynter @anne_wynter is a gentle reminder that even in the middle of busy days, there’s magic in slowing down. When plans change, sometimes that’s where the joy begins.
Short, sweet, and exactly what I needed. Have you been craving a slower pace and less noise too? @harperkids
