The year 1936 was a turning point for Herbert List: in the year following the enactment of the Nuremberg Race Laws, his private life came under general suspicion. Artist friends such as Erika and Klaus Mann and Andreas Feininger had fled, and List, who also had Jewish roots, received warnings that the Gestapo was monitoring his openly gay lifestyle and his contempt for the Nazis. Without further hesitation, he left his homeland and his life as a coffee merchant behind. The transition from the life of a merchant to the adventure of an artist’s life under the Mediterranean sun, however, proved to be a successful step forward. The passionate amateur photographer became a professional amateur. ‚One of List’s most iconic images, MAN and DOG was taken in the summer of 1936, the year Herbert List left Germany to flee impending prosecution. His first travel took him to Switzerland and then to Italy, before he settled in Greece the following year. He spent some time in Liguria, especially on the Riviera between Rapallo, Santa Margherita and Portofino. He has often been called the ‘magician of light,’ a title he is not entirely innocent of: even the title of his first book, Light over Hellas, feeds this myth.
