Tiny new arrivals at Hemsley! 🖤🐒
We’re excited to share the birth of twin black-tailed marmosets, who are now just over a week old and doing brilliantly alongside the rest of the family group.
Their arrival means we are now home to TEN black-tailed marmosets - the largest group of this species in human care anywhere in the world.
This is an important milestone for the species, and we hope that in the near future we’ll be in a position to help establish new breeding pairs with other zoological collections globally, supporting the long-term future of these incredible primates.
Keep an eye on our socials for more updates as the twins continue to grow! 🌿
🌏 It’s World Binturong Day! 🐻🍿
Meet Raja & Ratu, our Javan binturongs who joined us a few years ago and have been stealing hearts ever since! ❤️
Did you know binturongs are also called bearcats or even popcorn bears because they smell like freshly popped popcorn? 🍿👀
These incredible animals are found across parts of Asia and are one of only TWO carnivores with a prehensile tail - perfect for climbing through the trees 🌳 Despite this, fruit actually makes up most of their diet! 🍉
Sadly, binturong populations have declined by around 30% in the last 30 years due to habitat destruction, the illegal wildlife trade, and exploitation linked to Kopi Luwak (civet coffee).
By learning more about species like the binturong, we can all play a part in helping protect wildlife and the forests they call home 🌿
Can you guess who did this poo?
Checking our animals poo everyday is an incredibly important part of animal care and welfare and we must say, this one looks perfect!

Trust us… you might just fall in love with tapirs by the end ❤️
New Arrival! 🤩
😻 Earlier this year, in January, we welcomed a beautiful female Geoffroy’s cat from @zoobratislava . After settling in behind the scenes, this week she was finally introduced to our resident male, Bonito. We’re thrilled to say it couldn’t have gone better!
The pair have already proven to be quite the match, showing lots of positive interactions and curiosity towards one another. It’s always a special moment when introductions go smoothly, and we’re hopeful for what the future may bring for this charming duo 💛
📰 Stay tuned for updates as they continue to get to know each other!
🌿She's got to work on her hiding techniques however! 👀
🤩 We’re halfway through the Easter half-term, and there’s still plenty to see and do 🐾
If you haven’t visited yet, now’s a great time to explore the zoo, catch a talk or feeding, and spend a relaxed day with the animals.
Already been? There’s always something new to spot on a second visit 👀
Plan your trip and make the most of the rest of the break.

Bank Holiday or not, the animals need care! We can't wait to show you the final transformation to our Geoffroy's Cat enclosure and announce the new arrival!
🔊 Turn your sound on and hear the sounds of the zoo once everyone has gone home and the sun is setting!
Can you hear our Maned Wolves roar barking and our Squirrel Monkeys calling?
👉 We’ve welcomed a new arrival: Making his first appearance, it's... 🥁
Barney, the first of our red ruffed lemurs.
🌿 Native to the rainforests of Madagascar, red ruffed lemurs are now critically endangered. Habitat loss and hunting have caused major population declines, and they’re now among the world’s most threatened primates.
He has settled in fatastically and is slowly being introduced to his neighbours 🧡
