Last Saturday was very busy at #helpingact food bank. Next Saturday will be even busier, as we have twenty families to pack for.
15 families requested food assistance during the week. So on Thursday our ‘Long Life Team’ gathered and made 15 long life food bags and labelled them.
On Saturday, the Fresh Food team plus other helpers gathered and made another 15 bags of fruits, vegetables and breakfast items.
We thank Ben, Frankie and Nick Fuller who came and helped with the fresh food packing. Each of these bags was matched with long life bags and tagged for delivery .
Those families who asked for meat were given chicken as well.
Three families turned up to collect food themselves; twelve hampers were home delivered on Saturday afternoon by our helpers
Many thanks to all helpers. It is you who make a difference 🙏
Let us keep the flame alive, the flame of love and care for all.

Saturday is our usual delivery day for food hampers but this week we were busy on Sunday as well.
As the cost-of-living rises, we usually make two extra food hampers on Saturday for emergencies. Not only were these extra hampers delivered to two families in need, but a third hamper had to be made and delivered urgently. All this is possible because of your support. Thank you all.
Monday was delivery day for Northside schools breakfast deliveries.
We delivered to Franklin Pry, Taylor Pry and Secondary, Strathnairn Pry and Gungahlin College.
We also added a ‘NEW School’ today to our list of schools in Canberra for providing breakfast to students. It was Turner Pry School. Thankful to Ruby, the Student Coordinator, who picked up food items from our Franklin Hub.
With the addition of Turner Primary we now have 10 schools and 2colleges where we are giving free breakfast to those students who are members of Breakfast Clubs or contact Student Coordinators.
Let us keep helping our own future as a community - Canberra Community.

HelpingACT’s weekly community dinners have become increasingly popular events, providing an opportunity for all to meet and share food in a relaxed community setting.
Last Friday we hosted dinner at Kippax Uniting Church where around 90 guests attended, including some 15 kids.
All enjoyed Turkish Food from Lyneham Turkish Shop and Kingsleys chicken nuggets and awesome chips from Kingsleys Kippax. A crowd favourite was the delicious baklawa by Linda 🥰
A highlight for the kids was our helper Grace’s twisting balloons , which added to the festive atmosphere of the evening.
Thanks to ACT’s Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry for attending the event and helping serve the dinners.
HelpingACT is sincerely thankful to Commonwealth Bank Tuggeranong Branch for sponsoring the dinner.
We know that the rising cost of living is making life difficult. Our sponsors are making life a little easier. Thank you .
Special thanks to all volunteers who came along to help.

HelpingACT Trudie Repair/Replace Fundraising
HelpingACT's long-time Mitsubish Triton ute workhorse known as “Trudie” has suffered a significant mechanical setback and needs the engine as well as the injectors replaced.
Trudie is key to HelpingACT's service, delivering goods to those who need it as well as towing HelpingACT's Food Trailer (known as Foodie) around the region to provide hot meals for those doing without.
So HelpingACT is raising funds to either repair or replace Trudie (whichever provides the best value for the funds).
Please give what you can so that we can continue our food services for those who need our help. Donations can be made at this link:

Thank you for your generosity.

Great to join friends this morning at the launch of ‘Canberra’s Cost of Living Crisis: voices from the front line’ by Nick Fuller. An incredibly timely book given we know things are going to get even tougher over the next period. Please have a read and think about how you can help:

This newly published booklet presents a birds-eye view from Canberra’s community sector of the pressures on those struggling to make ends meet in today’s cost-of-living crisis.
Those charities profiled here -from large national organisations to grass-roots, home grown food pantries- report increased demand on their services with inadequate resourcing to meet those demands.

#HelpingACT started another chapter of collaboration yesterday as we joined hands with Woden Community Service for a monthly community dinner at the Hub - a space that fosters community connection, collaboration, and the delivery of essential services to the local community.
22 guests enjoyed Chinese cuisine with baklava for dessert. This number is sure to grow!
Senior WCS staff attended including Leonie and Leanne as well as HrlpingACT volunteers Manar, Nida, Nick, Cory, Jagmeet Singh, Abderahman, Grace and Mijica. Thanks to all for volunteers.
Jill Strickland must be congratulated for conceiving the idea which is now a part of the HelpingACT and WCS calendar.
Our community dinners offer an opportunity for meeting other community members in a very friendly environment and eating with them. Please consider coming along to future dinners.
