Next Friday April 3 - Free Music Fridays, our live in-store concert series curated by @davehurl continues with a performance by Power Quartet Unit. A powerhouse unit blending soulful foundations with experimental sensibilities. Kenn Thomas (Piano) : A pillar of Detroit creative music known for his sophisticated harmonic language and elegant touch rooted in both Classicism and the Avant-garde. Zekkereya El-magharbel (Trombone): A visionary artist who integrates North African Maqam and Afro-Arab sonic histories. Curator of @tuesdays.at.trinosophes , member of The Pan Afrikan People’s Arkestra. Jaribu Shahid (Bass): A veteran of Detroit improvised music, member of Griot Galaxy, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, and the Sun Ra Arkestra, providing a legendary, deep-toned foundation. David Hurley (Drums): A versatile rhythmic engine known for his conversational flow and technical ingenuity. Metro Detroit native Nathan Erskine Smith (Woodwinds, Bass Clarinet, and Electronics) opens the show and sets the tone with an intimate solo set, creating atmospheric, textured soundscapes that bridge classical precision and Avant-garde freedom. Every time I walk into a record store, I’m not “the DJ” … I’m 7-year-old Todd again with big ears and bigger curiosity. Pulled up to Hello Records and ended up doing what real music heads do — talking pressings, samples, producers, first issues vs. reissues… the kind of conversations that don’t happen in comment sections. Chopped it up with the owner and staff, felt the energy, respected the culture… and of course I couldn’t leave empty-handed. A few quality gems coming home with me. No playlists. No algorithms. Just intention and vinyl. For the collectors, the crate diggers, the ones who still read liner notes — you know this feeling. Support your local record shops. That’s where the soul still lives. 💿✨ #VinylCommunity #RecordCollector #CrateDigging #AnalogVibes #MusicCulture

Next Friday January 2nd - the Hello Free Music Fridays series extends further into future dimensions with a live performance from the far out trio of: John Pablo Rojas (Cello) Indira Edwards (Viola) Dave Hurley (Percussion) John Pablo Rojas’ raw and unconventional voice on cello was a highlight of last March’s Free Music Friday performance, and we look forward to more classical counterpoint and unbridled abstraction from him in this format. Indira Edwards is a composer and improviser who performs on viola, keyboards, electronics and voice in various contexts, including solo as Little Fly, in ensembles with Mike Khoury and Ben Hall, and in an abstract duo with Rojas as Iron Joy. Dave Hurley is a percussionist and is the organizer of Free Music Fridays. He is an indispensable catalyst for creative activity in the Detroit improvised music scene, and we are always overjoyed to help him present his all-killer programming and ensemble curation here in the shop.
