You want robots to do your dishes, not your creative work. What if I told you these robots already exist? I talk AI from a perspective of business owners with Matt Rouse, and reflect on the old internet in the process. Available on your favourite podcast platform, link in my bio

The thing people are angry about when it comes to AI is not AI, but capitalism. Josh Davila’s argument is that refusing to engage with the technology puts you at a disadvantage without changing any of the underlying conditions. The more productive position is pushing for open source models and real policy change around how this stuff proliferates. Full episode on Spotify and YouTube. Link in bio.

Episode 13 is live, and this one feels different. Khasir Hean and I meet almost every Tuesday at Civic Tech Toronto. He runs the Technologists for Democracy breakout session, and every week I leave thinking about something he said. This conversation is the longer version of that. We get into the campaigns TFD have run against companies scanning people’s faces in public without consent. We talk about the gap in Ontario’s privacy laws that lets companies do this unchecked. We get into AI honestly, with someone who has actually trained machine learning models and isn’t here to sell you on either the hype or the doom. But the reason I really wanted to get this episode out now is the People’s Consultation on AI. On March 9th in Toronto, TFD and the Tech Workers Coalition are hosting an event for regular people to have a say in how AI gets implemented in Canada. The federal government ran their own consultation last year and it was heavily biased toward industry. This is the people’s response. You don’t need to be a tech expert to show up. You just need to care about where this is going. 🎧 Link in bio.

Bridging chains still gives a crypto marketer panic attacks. Imagine what it feels like for everyone else. 😅 Priyal Jain makes a brilliant comparison to India’s UPI rollout - where banks sat with people in community centres, in every local language, to onboard them person to person. Crypto has never done anything close to that. Full episode of Is This The New Internet? - link in bio.

“In the age of AI, taste is expensive.” 👆 Priyal Jain said it and it’s stuck with me. Anyone can generate content now. The edge is knowing what’s actually good. Full episode on Is This The New Internet? - link in bio.

If you’re running campaigns without tracking attribution, you’re burning budget. 🔥 Safary Ambassador Priyal Jain breaks down the Web2 marketing fundamentals that Web3 still hasn’t figured out - from pixels and Google Analytics to heat maps that show how users actually move through your site. Marketers in Web3 & beyond, we’ve got a masterclass from Priyal Jain on the newest episode of Is This The New Internet? with Marv! Priyal is somebody for whom I’ve had incredible admiration for since the first day we worked together. We met at Blockwiz, where we both headed up our respective departments and I was in awe of how she weaved together data and narrative when pitching marketing plans. The timing of bringing her onto the podcast coincides with a quieter, more deliberate phase of crypto. Mind-numbing valuations and barrages of hype have died down, this is when the serious stuff for upcoming cycles gets put in place. This episode is for those who see beyond simple price action, and want to use crypto’s rails for genuine societal development. We are both from India, and discussing the outsized ire directed at our fellow South Asians within crypto was a long-overdue conversation. It’s an honest, reflective chat between two people who genuinely want this industry to succeed. Available wherever you get your podcasts!

The Coinbase Super Bowl ad got booed. Actual bars full of people, watching the game, booing the TV. Leadership said “if you’re talking about it, it worked.” And that response tells you everything about where crypto is as an industry right now. We’ve got metrics for everything that happens inside the ecosystem. TVL, transaction volume, wallet growth. But for an industry with fewer daily active users than Grammarly, there’s almost no serious measurement of how we’re perceived by the people we supposedly want to serve. The Super Bowl was a rare glimpse of external data. And we explained it away instead of listening. I wrote about what this moment reveals - and why “we’re early” might be the cope that ensures mainstream adoption never arrives. Link in bio.

Tep No is playing The Dance Cave (Lee’s Palace) on February 13th at 7pm. Valentine’s Day adjacent. He does requests during his sets. Deep cuts. Random tracks from old compilations. The kind of thing that only works when people actually know your catalog. New single “Better Times” drops January 30th on Sam Feldt’s label (Disco Wax/Spinnin’ Records). Free t-shirts at the show. If you’re in Toronto and want to see an independent artist who’s built everything on his own terms, this is it. From Episode 11 of Is This The New Internet.
