This year has been unimaginably meaningful for me as an author 🥹 @genevievegodboutillustration @candlewickpress ✨ Dear Bookstore was released in April this year, right before indie bookstore day :) Ever since, it has been on a big adventure, glowing on the shelves of so many sweet indie bookstores who have generously shared their own stories with us all year long. And now, it even made the top 15 books of the year list by @bookshop_org !! (One of only 5 kids books!) Our little love letter to indies was also featured on the cover of @americanbooksellers 2025 Best Books for Young Readers catalogue 🫶 And and and it was translated into French, Italian, and will be coming soon in Korean. WOWWWW!! I also got to celebrate Dear Bookstore in the very places that it was created for by singing at indies across the country. There is magic in books, and indie bookstores are powerful places to discover that magic, gather, organize, and still buy #bannedbooks! I must say so many thank you’s to firstly the acquiring editor of this book, Karen Lotz who has since moved on from Candlewick but was the one who saw the glimmer of what this story could be. She took the time to help me grow my roots and branches as an author and I am forever grateful. To the Candlewick marketing team for doing the absolutele MOST to help Dear Bookstore find its way to the shelves of the indies we all love. Ya’ll are the dream team full of indie booksellers and artists! And a most humble and endless gratitude to Geneviève!!! Since the first day I met @genevievegodboutillustration (both of us holding our advance copies of the book) I have felt her own magical glow that she so stunningly poured into our book 💜✨ I am so grateful for the story she painted, for her neon yellow brilliance and poetic elegance depicting a young reader growing up (and growing with) her bookstore. Thank you for making an author’s dreams come true 😭 And to each friend, teacher, parent, poet, bookstore lover who purchased a copy of my book this year. Thank you for believing in the magic of bookstores. No Ai was used to write this! 🤗

Your friendly reminder to NOT BUY BOOKS ON AMAZON 🤗 Shopping at my local indie bookstore this weekend in Los Angeles reminded me that I want to share some photos from when I got to host storytime at Books Are Magic in Brooklyn this April! I had the honor of sharing my new picture book DEAR BOOKSTORE, illustrated by @genevievegodboutillustration and published by @candlewickpress 🥹 It’s rare to be sent on “book tour” as an author these days, much less as a picture book author. But my publisher was amazingly supportive when I begged to visit Parnassus in Nashville and Books Are Magic in Brooklyn. These storytimes were part of the dream I had for sharing the message of this book and it’s more important now than ever. We can resist in small ways too, friends. Shop local. I wish I didn’t need to hold up a sign with such a simple truth 🪧 I hope my immigrant neighbors, all children, and the people fighting to protect them feel safe soon soon soon. Today was an emotionally moving protest, and I started crying a bit when a huge group of high school students crossed the street (chanting loudly and proudly) to join us 🥹 I do believe we will win this 🫶 I’ve also made a personal promise to myself that I will take one *inconvenient* action weekly to stand up against racism, hatred, and devastating violations of human dignity in the US. This is what democracy looks like 🪧 Today was my first time bringing my uke to a protest! I felt a little nervous to jump in at first, but when the leader started chanting with a tune, Alex asked me, “do you think you could figure out how to play that?” Once I started strumming, I remembered what the whole point of being a musician is in the first place: to be part of something bigger than myself. Feeling extra lucky we made two new drummer friends @kellybreauxfitness & Colleen! Proud to have participated in the call to walkout today with my dear teacher pal @betsybasom ! Year 11 in the books! books! The sun was shining and the day was magic ☀️#PDXBookFest @literaryarts What is it that I get up to at the Portland book Festival every year? I am the emcee of the kids stage where I musically introduce each of the authors and illustrators who are sharing their books. This year, I even got to share my own picture book (illustrated by @genevievegodboutillustration !!) I FEEL SO LUCKY!!! More pics from that part soon! The biggest thank you to @amandaleighpdx who took a chance on a children’s singer-songwriter from LA who cold emailed her one day in 2014. I’ve been quite offline lately because me and Bow (my ukulele) are teaching music to kiddos nonstop these days! 🍎 And I am so excited to have many more picture books coming out over the upcoming years with @candlewickpress and @tundrabooks ! Sharing my author journey with my students is an unexpected delight I could have never even imagined 🫶 So stay tuned for all my usual songs and stories! I feel so lucky because my dear friend and long time champion @sissopolis Christine Eaves connected the dots to bring me to this role and school! And now I get to see (and share an umbrella with) an amazing and inspiring friend every day. Beyond grateful! Some highlights so far: 🍁 This week, a student raised her hand to tell me she brought me a leaf. 🎸 My first and second grade students already know the C chord AND the F chord on ukulele. I don’t know who’s more proud, me or them! 😋 📚 I get to read and sing about the many stories I have been championing for the past decade in each one of my lessons. It’s truly a full circle moment! While I’ve needed to focus my attention and time on my new school and students this season, I am excited to share about my journey ahead and the curriculum, songs, and stories that are already starting to grow.
