COMMENT “RUBY” TO WIN A FREE HOODIE 📚
the “beyond february” hoodie | march 6 @3pm est | helloblackchild.com 👭🏾💕
FACT: Ruby Bridges was born in 1954 in Mississippi. Later, she was raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, with her mother, father, and siblings. That same year, the Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education declared educational segregation unconstitutional. Although this ruling meant that schools in Louisiana were required to desegregate, some schools refused to comply.
The Bridges family decided to enroll Ruby in William Frantz Elementary School after she passed the required entrance exams as a first grader. Ruby and her family were supported by the NAACP during this time.
On her first day of school, Ruby was accompanied by U.S. Marshals. She was met by an angry and racist mob of students, parents, and community members protesting her attendance. The crowd gathered outside the school and created chaos. Around 500 students were pulled out of school by their parents, who did not want their children attending school with her. Because Ruby was so young, she thought the loud crowd was celebrating Mardi Gras. Her entire first day was spent in the principal’s office for her safety.
Ruby never missed a day of school. She had a supportive and dedicated teacher, Mrs. Henry, but she still experienced extreme racism as a young girl. Despite this, many people of all races supported her education. Some even donated money to help her family after her father lost his job.
Ruby Bridges became a pioneer in the fight to desegregate education and remains an important figure in American civil rights history.
*giveaway winner will be announced on March 5th*
