a new collection of paintings hanging about the old smooth walls of @sauvagephx / amongst natural flowing wine and conversations of humanity, you’ll find six pieces of sungod glory ready and willing to open the gates of an early and luminous summer.
i hadn’t much planned on reviving the painted sungod, but after some years of collectors, friends and strangers reminding me how much light and wholeheartedness they carry, in a time where both are in short supply, i’m dabbling again with the optimistic indifference of our god, the sun.
and i couldn’t be happier about it, as painting these friends brings me a heap of reminded balance and joy.

she calls often, the ring no more than an imagined seagull bark and on the other end the muffled frequency of shore break and salted static. come home she whispers, there’s a leopard shark preparing chowder as we speak.

a lovely siren and crab commission headed south to san carlos where the salty cortez will welcome them home.
but more important. this custom made apron from my good friends @chilaousa - hand cut from japanese denim, deadstock military webbing and some repurposed d-rings from 1940’s military duffles, this baby is both built to last yet comfy as a seaweed wrap.
i prefer a high waist and short drop, just above the knees- ideal for dancing, contemplating with your legs crossed or just showing off some summer leg- and matt and david made it happen flawlessly.

it is strictly reserved for sirens, that old spiny lobster i’ve come to know as herman, and of course semi-pro boogie boarder esteban who rings to inform when the shore break bottom is more halibut than sand and we ought to prepare for a good season of pickled fish.

because time was not created for us earth folk. if it was it wouldn’t be in a constant short supply, we wouldn’t have to find it or spend it or save it, it would just be there and we would be too.
and every time i stop to talk to a turtle or a tree or the moon or paint a picture of a sun riding a crocodile would not be considered a waste of time but just a good time.

three: an easy reminder for myself that we can be different people each day. not for others sake, not even for our own, just that we can change with the flow of daily life, and to keep the fight against the stubbornness of being right. or wrong. or anything in between.

“all in good time, and that’s what it was”
i sometimes describe my painting style as optimistic. which makes sense as i generally consider myself as such. but some folks mistake optimism with ignorance. i don’t think it’s a blind faith that everything is great or it all works out in the end, as they say. our bodies die and decay in the end, perhaps not beautifully but that what makes it beautiful. optimism is understanding the world is a terrible and wonderful place all at the same time and still finding the gratitude to feel and appreciate it all each day we’re here.
