I Wrote a Book! The Cover is Here! It feels right that I’m dropping the cover of my book, Never Can Say Goodbye: The Life of a Death Doula and the Art of a Peaceful End, on Halloween. It’s a day when we’re asked to sit a little closer to death, to remember those who’ve gone before us, and to honor the space between the living and the dead. This book has lived inside me for years. Decades! It’s made up of stories from the bedsides I’ve sat beside, the hands I’ve held, and the silences I’ve shared with people taking their final breaths. But it’s also about the living. About us! The ones still figuring out how to talk about death, how to grieve, how to die with fewer regrets, how to heal. Never Can Say Goodbye looks at the reasons why death is such a quiet subject in so many homes. We’ve inherited a silence born from generations of trauma, from medical racism, from loss that never got the chance to be named. Through this book, I wanted to break that silence. I wanted to show that peace, healing, and even joy can exist in the same space as dying. This book is for anyone who’s lost someone and didn’t know what to do with the ache. It’s for those walking loved ones home. It’s for the ones who want to learn how to hold space, how to listen, and how to let go. I promise it’s for you. [laying my damn self off] Day 15 of 30 ✦ grieving is a part of living I’ve had to grieve a lot of parts of myself in this season. To grieve is to still be here. To make peace with your life while you’re still living it. To honor the people who have gone on, the ones you can no longer interact with. A few months ago, I went to my friend @hello.darnell ’s book launch here in Brooklyn — Never Can Say Goodbye. I’m almost done with it now. I’ve cried more than I have in a long time. I’ve laughed. I’ve paused to reflect on how precious time really is. If you want a damn good book that will get you uncomfortable, that might feel unfamiliar, but will ultimately wake you up inside — grab a copy. You won’t be disappointed. #layingmyselfoff #nevercansaygoodbye #navigatingchange #creativesinrebuild #blackauthor

You ever think about what your dead folks would have thought about these wild things we still get to experience?

Join us & the @the.dc.death.collective in welcoming @hello.darnell to SSB! He will be in conversation with @being.jaya about his new book, Never Can Say Goodbye. Tickets at the šŸ”—ā     About the book: ā€œNever Can Say Goodbye is deliciously woven from threads of guidance, memory, and devotion to the sacred labor of holding space at the end of life." —Alua Arthur, author of Briefly Perfectly Human Compelling narrative that illuminates the role of a death doula and the often-unseen ways people show up for one another at the end of life. Across cultures and communities, death is frequently surrounded by silence and uncertainty. Many of us are taught to avoid conversations about loss, grief, and dying, even as we find ourselves quietly doing this work for loved ones, sitting at bedsides, holding hands, listening to final stories, and loving people through their last moments. Never Can Say Goodbye invites readers to recognize this shared human experience and to see themselves in the sacred act of holding space.

The invitation to here is still there. I missed the sounds of nature. Today, I saw the chipmunks have returned. šŸ«¶šŸ¾

In my book, Never Can Say Goodbye, I wrote about my Muslim client whose family told him they weren’t honoring his beliefs and wishes and were going to give him a Christian funeral. Thankfully, folks were prepared for the bs. Don’t be the reason people are extra ready to die.

Never Can Say Goodbye is for everybody. Because everybody is going to lose somebody. Everybody will need to say something hard one day. Everybody will wish they asked more questions, wrote more things down, stayed five minutes longer, made one more call. This book isn’t just about death. It’s about love, memory, family, regret, care, and the conversations we keep putting off like we have forever. We don’t. We will die. That’s why it’s for everybody. Everywhere you buy books and audiobooks. Link in bio.
