NAVA Artist File: HOSSEI HOSSEI @heelingfeeling is a multidisciplinary Australian artist of Persian, Turkish, and Russian ancestry, based on Gadigal Land in Sydney. In this video, he reflects on the evolution of his practice. He explores art's capacity to heal and connect marginalised communities, and shares how stepping back from constant production allowed intuition to guide his work, allowing ideas to surface with greater clarity. Video production by Atypical @atypical_creative_studio #NAVAmember #NAVAArtistFile NAVA acknowledges the Gadigal and Wangal peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the Land on which this was filmed and pays respects to First Nations communities' ancestors and Elders. OKAEEEEEEEEEEEE ✨ TOO~B opens today at the Sydney Opera House, Centre for Creativity space✨ When thinking about TOO~B, I wanted to make a space that spins, rolls, and loops ~ everything is round, wormy, tubular, forever going around and spinning ~~~~~~ Huge love to @instantjenn for inviting me to @sydneyoperahouse , believing in this project from the very start, and giving it all your energy and love to bring it to life! ❤️ Jenn, your trust, encouragement, and tireless support have allowed this spinning adventure to even exist. You’ve held space for risk, play, and chaos, and guided everything with warmth and care ~this wouldn’t be TOO~B without you. A massive thank you to Tamara Harrison, who oversaw this project and supported it every step of the way ~your guidance made such a difference. @tanjamijan , whose hardworking hands went into every single stitch and glue to build this world, and to Rachael, who helped us along the way with so much care at the sewing table. Big thanks to @niki.johnson.sound , who created this gorgeous and sweet silly sound that makes you feel really good and matches the space perfectly and and Victoria Pham who came in and shaped it with us and to Sue Giles for bringing her experience, wisdom, and generosity to guide this project. Extended thanks to the incredible facilitators who will be welcoming everyone into TOO~B and keeping the magic spinning every day for the next two weeks. HOSSEI was invited to develop a series of his well-loved LOVEKNOTS – designed especially for team identification at all public programs and events.⁠ ⁠ Commissioned and launched in celebration of Wear It Purple Day – an annual initiative that first emerged in schools, and which strives to foster safe and empowering spaces for rainbow young people – our new HOSSEI × PAS × LOVEKNOTS, made in bright purple, pink and yellow colourways, are anything but uniform.⁠ ⁠ Beyond schools, rainbow young people are an integral part of our workplaces and communities as well. At PAS, we are committed to building spaces where everyone feels seen and celebrated all year round. This commitment is reflected in the results of our most recent studio callout, where 51% of applicants identified as LGBTQIA+ – a powerful reminder of the importance of visibility and inclusion in the arts.⁠ ⁠ Today from 10am at PAS Granville, join us and celebrate Wear it Purple Day in style and in-person with HOSSEI in a vibrant, hands-on workshop. Wrapped in gratitude to have shared this moment on Sunday the 29th, when I took over Marrickville Town Hall as part of Inner West Council’s Creative Toolbox Symposium. It truly felt like stepping into a dream — a world draped in pink curtains, bursting with confetti and song. I was so thrilled to invite people into my world: a space of joy, care, play, and deep feelingggggggggggg We danced and sang through CC's Choir and BUBBLE FEVER — a performance of togetherness featuring the luminous Valentina Penkova, Jonny Ellis, Beau Lai, Benn Webb, and Eugene Choi. The atmosphere truly shimmered with the hypnotic video works ((2025), Love is a quantum labyrinth, video work projected, 15min 49sec, looped. And (2018), Stranger in Paradise, fabric hanging. )of Jodie Whalen and the tender, powerful cut-outs ( Love from here, acrylic painted cutouts on plywood, various domestic items as weights. ) by the incredible Salote Tawale. We were graced by the soul-soothing sounds of Niki Johnson which really made me feel like I was dreaming!!! And of course the support of the very talented Tanja Mijan — whose brilliance I could not have done this without (bonus video at the end of Tanja talking about BUBBLES! HEHE). Huge thanks to our incredible installers Jubo and Maëlyse for bringing the world to life with such care. And to the amazing Inner West Council crew: thank you for creating space for artists to dream, build, and share. I’m beyond proud to have been a part of this special gathering. My heart is so full. I'm proud to share that my work 🪸ESSSENSSSE🐚 originally brought to life with the support of @vergegallery —is now officially on TOUR! First stop: 🪸@bathurstregionalartgallery , where the exhibition is now open and runs through to September 2025. It will then travel to 🪼@yam.coffs (Yarilla Arts and Museum) from November 2025 – March 2026, and to 🐚 @waggawaggaartgallery from May – July 2026. 🌟As part of the exhibition, I’ll also be presenting a special selection of merch from the @ho55ei BLESSENSE pop-up shop—a playful extension of the ESSSENSSSE universe. Meet HOSSEI (@heelingfeeling ), the Sydney based artist who loves costumes, joy, hot pink, and his mum! In fact, he’s made his mum Nahid the star of his new vibrant, fun performance THUNDERBLOOM: LIVE, a “sci-Fri Persian pop musical”. "She's this 70-year-old ethnic woman that I just don't see in the arts, so I really wanted to give her a voice,” HOSSEI says. "I feel a bit cheesy because this is kind of like a love letter to my mum. So in a sense, I'm weirdly being like, 'I love you, Mum’!” We visited HOSSEI’s colourful studio in the lead-up to the show – click the link in bio for the full story.
