Cleaning up the vines! Our crew lead Crisellia explains how we shoot thin, clean, and keep shoots for next year.
This process is important and takes a skilled crew. Knowing which shoots to pull and which to keep for a good harvest this year and shoot positions for next year is vital.
Crisellia has worked here almost 20 years and knows our vineyards well. She’s a wonderful teacher to our crew and helps us stay accurate.
Good news and bad news.
Let’s start with the bad…mealybugs have been sighted in the vineyard. Spotted here are 3 female mealybug on a shoot.
Now the good news! Our native plantings have supported mealybug destroyers which we showed in the last post. This time last year we would see around 20 mealybug per shoot and this year we are seeing as little as a few and only up to about 10.
The destroyers are doing their job, which means next year should be even better!
When you work with nature instead of against it good things happen.
We geek out about bugs around here! This sighting made us very happy!
This is a mealybug destroyer (Cryptolaemus montrouzieri). This is the larvae stage which just so happeneds to look like a mealybug and we witnessed her eating mealybugs!
This is showing us that we are on the right track with our native fauna plantings. We haven’t released any beneficial insects this year and here they are!
With patience and persistence of organic, regenerative and native practices we are seeing our vineyard thrive with beneficial life!
We don’t farm organically to make a commodity. We farm organically to capture a moment in time. Each vintage is made with intention of the season in mind.
We choose the tough path because we know it’s better for the earth, our animals, staff and customers.
We are dependent on nature in both farming and making clean wines. It’s takes more time and costs more money, but to us there is no other way.
Small, family owned, organic, no chemicals, no shortcuts.
Grow it Pure!
Is a wine from barrel to barrel really that different? Yes!
Sarah explains how she barrels selects for blends and why it’s important.
Aroma, texture, color, and quality are very different from barrel to barrel. These are the things we keep in mind while blending a wine, some barrels are very good aromatically but not so great texturally and other have great structure but muted aromatics. But tasting through each barrel we can find the nuances in each and highlights those in the blends!
Happy birthday to our founder Anne-Marie Hedges!
Born in Champagne France, traveled the world and eventually settled on Red Mountain her husband, Tom Hedges and two kids.
She continues to inspire us everyday! What she built from nothing has turned into a beautiful estate vineyard and chateau. Cheers to Anne-Marie! 🍾
What a weekend! We love our release parties and had such a great time seeing so many club members come through!
Along with our exclusive club release wines we also debuted our LitroVin and Piquettes to get ready for spring and summer patio days!
A HUGE thank you to all of our club members near and far for believing in what we do, your support means the world to us.
We are so appreciative of our amazing team who worked hard for months to put on this great event. What a great kick off to what will be a busy season of events!
