The starting point of my diploma project “혐오사회 Hatred Society in Korea” was the question: “What emotions did I experience while observing Korean society during the five years I lived in Germany, and what factors have shaped this society in such a way?”
This project is a graphic design work that visually interprets and communicates the structural presence of hatred within Korean society.
Through my experience living in Germany, I came to perceive Korean society from an outsider’s perspective, where strong expressions of hatred appeared embedded within its structure. This project begins by tracing the origins of these emotions and analyzing them within their broader social and historical contexts.
Drawing on Korea’s modern and contemporary history, identity, and the social imbalances and conflicts resulting from rapid economic growth, the project focuses on structuring the mechanisms through which hatred is formed, using visual language.
The outcome of this research is realized in a 176-page book titled “Hatred Society in Korea.” Rather than merely presenting information, the book is designed to enable an intuitive experience of complex social discourse through graphic design. Each chapter is built upon an independent visual system and layout, conveying both the narrative flow and the emotional density of the content.
By expanding text-based research into a visual narrative, this project proposes a design approach that allows social issues to be perceived and experienced more directly.

Unfortunately, due to the gender conflict, Korean society no longer views women as the weaker gender. But does this mean that women are no longer physically weak? This chapter also explains how Korean society has developed a disdain for weakness. So, what actions have politicians, who are supposed to represent the voices of the people, taken while this culture of hatred has been forming?
Ironically, politicians are actively fostering hatred. While it is their duty to listen to the people, represent them, and work towards uniting society, they have chosen to represent one thing: HATE. This page discusses how politicians are fueling division and examines the 2022 presidential election, which was widely regarded as the worst election in history.

"Disgust" is an emotion that involves a strong aversion to something, typically due to reasons like hatred or uncleanness. It is a complex emotion that encompasses feelings such as displeasure, avoidance, and dislike. Currently, there is a significant amount of hate present in Korean society. Among the most discussed topics are gender, the weak, and politics, which will be briefly explained here.
Gender conflict is by far the most pressing issue in Korea right now. In fact, the divide between men and women exceeds 70%, and this trend is worsening. This chapter explores the event that triggered the gender conflict and the social structural causes behind it in Korea.

This is the current problem facing Korean society, and all of these aspects have been brought together to explain the high suicide rate and deaths caused by loneliness in Korea.
For the 15th consecutive year, Korea has had the highest suicide rate among OECD member countries. As a “self-exploiting society,” people tend to take their own lives rather than blame the social structure. As I mentioned earlier, I reflected on what I felt during my year in Korea starting in 2017, and I too was once harshly self-exploiting out of fear of being excluded. Beyond self-exploitation, factors such as economic inequality, the breakdown of social communities, and other social and cultural issues contribute to this problem. I will elaborate based on the analysis of social psychologist Park Jin-young.

This introductory video is inspired by the Korean artist collective "YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES." They are artists who also speak out about social issues. Before delving into the work, I aimed to briefly explain Korea’s economic development, the problems it has caused, and the hatred that has arisen as a result.
